Op pad met boswachter Corina: “Vannacht nog was er brand. Ik ben heel bezorgd”
<p><strong>Europa staat in brand en het gevaar komt akelig dichtbij. Want ook bij ons is het al enige tijd droog en heet. We trekken naar de Hoge Kempen, Vlaanderens grootste natuurgebied, voor een tocht met boswachter Corina Cools. “Ik krijg al rillingen al ik deze wind voel.”</strong></p> <p></p> <p>“Da’s maf!” Collega’s Nathalie Carpentier en Fien Dillen reageren verbaasd wanneer boswachter Corina Cools vertelt dat er ook brandgevaar kan heersen terwíjl het sneeuwt. Dat is vandaag niet het geval, maar er geldt wel code oranje – het op één na hoogste niveau van brandgevaar – in het hele Nationaal Park Hoge Kempen.</p> <p></p> <p>De droogte, hitte en wind maken Corina erg bezorgd. En terecht, want vorig jaar is zo’n 75 hectare afgebrand en ook de nacht vóór het bezoek van Nathalie en Fien is er een brand geweest. 8 hectare in de as, de brandweerlui zijn nog bezig met blussen. “We moten wel preventief tewerk gaan”, zegt Corina. Behalve maaien en schapen zetten, zweren ze in de Hoge Kempen ook bij ‘beheerbranden’: gericht aangestoken branden. Screening van borstkanker uitbreiden of niet? “Hoeveel is een mensenleven waard?”
<p><strong>To screen or not to screen? De Europese Unie en het Federaal Kenniscentrum voor de Gezondheidszorg zijn het daarover oneens. Een uitbreiding van de borstkankerscreenings brengt enkele nadelen en een grote kost met zich mee, maar redt ook levens. Wat nu?</strong></p> <p></p> <p>Een op de zeven vrouwen krijgt in haar leven een borstkankerdiagnose. Bij vrouwen tussen de 40 en 54 is het zelfs de belangrijkste doodsoorzaak. Toch worden in België enkel vrouwen tussen de 50 en 69 uitgenodigd voor het bevolkingsonderzoek naar borstkanker. De Europese Unie raadt nu aan om de leeftijdscategorie uit te breiden.</p> <p></p> <p>Maar het Federaal Kenniscentrum voor de Gezondheidszorg (KCE) is een koele minnaar van die uitbreiding. “De voordelen wegen niet op tegen de nadelen”, klinkt het. Wat zijn nu de voor- en nadelen van zo’n uitbreiding? Gaat het hier om mensen of centen?</p> <p></p> <p>En wat doe je nu best als vrouw van 40+?
