Newport and the Great Folk Dream (2025)
In this episode of Dylan Revisited, I speak with two special guests: filmmakers Robert Gordon and Joe Lauro. Robert and Joe are the director and producer of a new film about the Newport Folk Festival called Newport and the Great Folk Dream. Check out our conversation and find out how the filmmakers got access to hours of unseen archive footage, originally shot by Murray Lerner across four editions of the Newport Folk Festival from 1963-66. Robert and Joe also discuss resisting the idea of making a film just about Bob Dylan, the help and wisdom they received from Dylan’s manager Jeff Rosen and the impact of A Complete Unknown on their project. Newport and the Great Folk Dream jas its UK Premiere at the BFI IMAX in London on October 29th at 5:45, as part of the 2026 Doc’n’Roll Festival of music documentaries. Tickets are available now at docnrollfestival.com (https://www.docnrollfestival.com/films/newport-and-the-great-folk-dream/) or directly from BFI (https://whatson.bfi.org.uk/imax/Online/default.asp?BOparam::WScontent::loadArticle::permalink=newport-great-folk-dream). For more on the film and to watch the trailer, visit the official website. Written, produced and performed by Colm Larkin. Theme music by Frank Harkin - check out his band Ha Ha Ha (https://open.spotify.com/artist/5PBdLB4FRWbBNyktiILmwE?si=J9WfG5_6TMu9l0pwHYX7EA). A book based on the podcast is now available. Busy Being Born (1960-66) tells the story of Bob Dylan’s early career through his albums, live recordings, bootleg tapes, film, TV appearances and more. It collects material already covered in this podcast series, while covering much more from those early days in Greenwich Village. Broadside Ballads Vol. 1 (with Martin Fitzgerald)
In this episode of Dylan Revisited, it’s time to meet the podcast’s first guest. Martin Fitzgerald is the author of a brilliant new book about the JFK assassination, The Umbrella Man and Other Stories, as well as Ruth and Martin’s Album Club. Borrowing the premise of the latter, I challenged Martin to listen to a record he had never heard before, Broadside Ballads Vol. 1, which features a number of Bob Dylan’s early compositions as well as performances by Dylan himself under the pseudonym Blind Boy Grunt. Find out what Martin thought of the record and hear his take on the time it was recorded in: JFK’s America of the early 1960s. Let’s revisit Broadside Ballads Vol. 1. Written, produced and performed by Colm Larkin. Theme music by Frank Harkin - check out his band Ha Ha Ha (https://open.spotify.com/artist/5PBdLB4FRWbBNyktiILmwE?si=J9WfG5_6TMu9l0pwHYX7EA). Bringing It All Back Home (1965)
In this episode of Dylan Revisited, I look back at Bringing It All Back Home, the first in Bob Dylan's trio of classic mid-60s albums, which sees the protest icon begin his thrilling transformation into a rock star. Another Side of Bob Dylan (1964)
In this episode of Dylan Revisited, I look back at Bob Dylan’s fourth studio album. Join me to revisit a single, wine-fuelled evening in June 1964, where the singer abandoned his protest icon status and embraced a more expansive interior side with classic songs like It Ain’t Me Babe, To Ramona, Chimes of Freedom and My Back Pages. Let’s revisit Another Side of Bob Dylan. Written, produced and performed by Colm Larkin. Theme music by Frank Harkin - check out his band Ha Ha Ha (https://open.spotify.com/artist/5PBdLB4FRWbBNyktiILmwE?si=J9WfG5_6TMu9l0pwHYX7EA). The Bootleg Series Vol. 1 (1961-63)
In this episode of Dylan Revisited, I look back at very first volume of The Bootleg Series, the long-running collection of outtakes, live shows and other rare recordings from throughout Bob Dylan’s career. I explore the extraordinary number of songs that Bob Dylan wrote over a three-year period from 1961-63 but never officially released until The Bootleg Series finally gave us high-quality audio versions of so many early gems. Let’s revisit The Bootleg Series Vol. 1. Written, produced and performed by Colm Larkin. Theme music by Frank Harkin - check out his band Ha Ha Ha (https://open.spotify.com/artist/5PBdLB4FRWbBNyktiILmwE?si=J9WfG5_6TMu9l0pwHYX7EA). The Times They Are a-Changin' (1964)
In this episode of Dylan Revisited, I look back at Bob Dylan’s third studio album, which cemented his (ultimately unwanted) position as a protest icon. I explore its themes of protest, societal change, and personal despair, contrasting the hopeful title track with the rest of the record’s darker narratives of injustice and heartbreak. Let's revisit The Times They Are a-Changin’. Written, produced and performed by Colm Larkin. Theme music by Frank Harkin - check out his band Ha Ha Ha (https://open.spotify.com/artist/5PBdLB4FRWbBNyktiILmwE?si=J9WfG5_6TMu9l0pwHYX7EA). In Concert: Brandeis University (May 1963)
In this episode of Dylan Revisited, we look back at a short live Bob Dylan set at small folk festival in the gym room at Brandeis University in Massachusetts. Recorded in May 1963, just weeks before the release of The Freewheelin’ saw Dylan become a star, it's one of the last chances to hear him perform at such a modest event and features great renditions of some of his early classics. Let's revisit In Concert at Brandeis University. Written, produced and performed by Colm Larkin. Theme music by Frank Harkin -check out his band Ha Ha Ha (https://open.spotify.com/artist/5PBdLB4FRWbBNyktiILmwE?si=J9WfG5_6TMu9l0pwHYX7EA). Folksinger's Choice (1962)
An early radio appearance featuring performances and conversation with Cynthia Gooding. In this episode of Dylan Revisited, we look back at one of Bob Dylan's first major radio show features from March 1962 when he appeared on the show Folksinger's Choice, hosted by Cynthia Gooding. Dylan performs a wide range of folk and blues standards, plus some of his early compositions, plus there's some compelling conversation with his husky-voiced host and plenty of Bob's myth-making. Let's revisit Folksinger's Choice. On the podcast, I call this a bonus episode but I since decided to make it freely available to all listeners. So just ignore those couple of references to "bonus". Written, produced and performed by Colm Larkin. Theme music by Frank Harkin. All other music is used for the purposes of illustration and is intended as fair use.
