Come hang out with Katy & Sam as we dive in to all things donkey! We’ll bring you educational & relatable information from industry professionals & other donkey owners so that we can hopefully make your life with longears a little less confusing. We both wholeheartedly agree that there is no single "correct" way to keep your donkey(s), so we're here to not only bring you advice from the professionals, but also our own personal successes & lessons learned (plus, hopefully a few laughs, too). You're guaranteed to hear all about Reba, Tina, Poppy, & Olive (& Abby, Ella, & Chino)!
Ear, Bray, RESCUE! With Andrea from Long Ears Rescue
In this episode we get to chat with founder, Andrea Durham of Long Ears Rescue! We learn about how her love for donkeys and mules started and what led to her journey into the world of rescue. We also dive into the "behind the scenes" work that comes with rescue and share some really sweet moments of how long ears change lives!
In this episode Andrea touches on the "skin/hide trade" for donkeys being used in traditional Chinese medicine. The realities of this can be difficult to hear and see, but we feel it is important to educate ourselves on the realities of horse and donkey exportation from the US and slaughter. This article: https://thehorse.com/184008/donkey-skin-trade-threatens-welfare-populations-worldwide/ from "The Horse" covers the broad strokes of the stakeholders involved. It also discusses legislation such as the SAFE act and laboratory alternatives to donkey hides. We also find this fact sheet https://www.horsesinourhands.org/fact-sheet by "Horses in Our Hands" helpful to debunk some of the controversies regarding horse and donkey slaughter.
