Are You All In? | Mark 1:14–20 | Peter Frey | Eastpoint Church Durham
Continuing in the Gospel of Mark, Peter Frey preaches from Mark 1:14–20, where Jesus enters Galilee announcing that the time has come and the kingdom of God has come near. The sermon makes two claims: the gospel calls us to turn from whatever we have made king and trust Jesus as the king who will transform the world, and that same king makes his reign personal and practical with two words in the Greek — come, follow me. Drawing on a distinction between an expert, who has studied a field, and a practitioner, who actually works in it, the message argues that Jesus is not a distant consultant offering ideas about our brokenness but the God who made us and knows what we need.Along the way the sermon looks at why Mark bothers to mention that James and John left Zebedee and the hired men — they left not a hobby but an identity and an inherited trade — and at how "gospel" functioned in the first century as a political announcement of a new king. The final movement turns to the church: God's plan for transforming the world is a transformed community of ordinary people, apprentices of Jesus who become practitioners of the kingdom, carrying his presence into parenting, teaching, writing, and work.Preached at Eastpoint Church in Durham, North Carolina.Chapters0:00 Scripture Reading: Mark 1:14–201:06 Welcome and Announcements3:15 Expert or Practitioner7:07 The Kingdom of God Has Come Near16:14 Come, Follow Me24:30 Apprentices of the King30:01 Practitioners of the Kingdom34:14 The Kingdom Without the KingScripture: Mark 1:14–20Preacher: Peter FreyEastpoint Church · Sundays at 10am · Oak Grove Elementary, Durham, NCPlan a visit: https://www.eastpointdurham.com/visitFollow on Instagram: https://instagram.com/eastpointdurhamSubscribe for a new sermon every week.#EastpointChurch #DurhamNC #Mark
