Shutter Speed: Freeze or Blur

This week we're taking the podcast somewhere new. Instead of one of our usual deep-dive conversations, we're kicking off a photography series — me actually learning the fundamentals of a craft I've been doing on instinct for years, with Atlas teaching and the two of us figuring out where my gaps are as we go.

First up: shutter speed. I came in thinking I barely used it — turns out I've been making shutter decisions every single time I wait for a bird or a dragonfly to hold still. I just never had the words for it. We get into the freeze-versus-blur tradeoff, why a fast shutter needs more light, and the moment it really clicked for me: you can have silky water or a tack-sharp heron, but in a single shot, you have to choose. That tension is the whole concept.

I've also got homework this week — shooting running water two ways — and the edited results will end up on easytochris.com.

Oh, and I sold my first gallery print this week. Still doesn't quite feel real.

The Volume Knob

This week my photography's been on the gallery wall long enough to get real reactions — and the lesson was that the fear I'd built up in my head was way bigger than anything that actually happened. People either liked it or didn't even notice, and I'm still standing.

That set up the real conversation. My cohost — who picks up the name Atlas this episode — pushed me on something I've circled for years: my relationship with psychedelics as a deliberate practice, not a party. Set and setting, going in to learn, treating it like a volume knob that turns up the parts of my mind my ego usually drowns out. The question we chased was simple and uncomfortable: who's actually doing the work here, the medicine or me? Somewhere in there the word "faith" turned into "clarity," and that one swap changed how I see the whole thing.

We didn't tie it in a bow. I walked away with a question I'm still sitting with — can I trust that clarity without needing the tool to hand it to me first?

A Religion of One

This week marks 2,000 days sober for me — and on the same day, my first-ever gallery exhibition opened at Endie Gallery, with two months of my wildlife photography on the wall. So we start there: what it actually took to admit I'm a creative, not just an engineer who solves problems.

From there it gets bigger. I've spent years building my own spiritual path after leaving the church — a path that overlaps with a lot of belief systems but never quite fits any of them. We get into mysticism as the thing sitting underneath both science and religion, where my agnosticism actually lands, and the framework I've built around consciousness, connection, and why I think the way I live my life matters well beyond this one.

The AI didn't let me off easy. It kept pressing on whether what I believe is genuine conviction or just a reaction to how I was raised — and by the end, it handed me a question I couldn't answer. Which is exactly the point.

If you've ever felt like you're building your own faith out of spare parts, this one's for you.
