Before Birth: Music, Memory, and the Developing Ear

What does a baby actually hear before birth, and how much of that experience can it remember? This episode explores the emerging science of prenatal musicality, from the womb's muffled soundscape to early recognition of the mother’s voice, heartbeat, and recurring sound patterns. We look at how fetuses begin learning through sound, how emotion may be communicated through both physiology and behaviour, and what researchers mean by prenatal attention, preference, and memory. We also examine where the science is less certain. Do fetuses experience music as music? Are they conscious in anything like the adult sense? The evidence points to remarkable early sensory and learning abilities, but also argues for caution when interpreting them through adult concepts of emotion, reflection, and musical experience.

Before We Are Born: The First Sounds We Hear

How early do we begin to hear, remember, and respond to music? This episode explores prenatal and postnatal sensory development, focusing on how fetuses and newborns experience sound and music. Even though sound is filtered through maternal tissue and amniotic fluid, babies in the womb can still perceive important musical features such as pitch, rhythm, and changes in intensity. Research also suggests that infants can retain auditory memories from before birth, responding differently to familiar melodies heard during pregnancy. The discussion then broadens to other developing senses, including newborn vision, facial recognition, and taste preferences. Together, these findings offer a fascinating look at how sensory experience begins before birth and how early exposure to sound may shape the first stages of perception, memory, and interaction with the world. The Compression of Sound: Economics and Evolution of Song Length

Why are so many popular songs around three minutes long, and why are they getting even shorter? In this episode, we trace the surprising history of song length, from the physical limits of early records and the demands of radio to today’s world of streaming algorithms, social media, and shrinking attention spans. We explore how economics, technology, and human psychology have all helped shape the music we hear. The classic three-minute song may have begun as a technological constraint, but modern streaming has created new incentives for fast hooks, shorter tracks, and repeat listens. At the same time, longer songs have not disappeared. Instead, popular music may be dividing into two worlds: short, attention-optimized tracks designed for the digital ecosystem, and longer songs that make room for storytelling, development, and musical immersion. From vinyl grooves to TikTok, this is the story of how technology has been quietly keeping time for popular music. Music and the Brain

What actually happens in the brain when we listen to music, play an instrument, or learn something new through sound? In this episode, we explore the neuroscience of musical engagement, moving beyond familiar ideas such as the “Mozart Effect” to examine what research actually tells us about music, neuroplasticity, cognition, and development across the lifespan. We look at the difference between simply listening to music and actively making it, and why musical performance recruits auditory, visual, motor, emotional, and executive systems at the same time. We also examine how musical training can reshape neural pathways, strengthen communication between brain regions, and produce measurable changes in the brain, sometimes surprisingly quickly. The discussion considers the role of the corpus callosum, motor and auditory cortices, working memory, processing speed, cognitive flexibility, and healthy aging. We also explore why beginning musical training early may produce different structural effects, while emphasizing that neuroplasticity continues throughout adulthood. Finally, we separate strong evidence from exaggerated claims. Music training appears particularly effective at strengthening abilities closely related to the demands of musical practice, but claims that music automatically raises IQ or improves unrelated academic abilities require much greater caution. At the center of the episode is a simple idea: the brain changes in response to what we repeatedly ask it to do. Musical experience becomes part of what researchers describe as our individual “learning biography,” leaving traces in both how the brain functions and how it is organized. Topics include musical engagement, neuroplasticity, brain development, cognitive transfer, working memory, expertise, deliberate practice, healthy aging, and the neuroscience of learning. Why Humans Make Music: Evolution, Connection, and Communication

Why do humans make music, and what purpose might it have served in our evolutionary past? This episode explores the origins of human musicality and the idea that music may be more than a cultural invention. Drawing on evolutionary, archaeological, and biological evidence, the discussion considers how music may have helped early humans strengthen social bonds, coordinate group behavior, communicate emotion, and support increasingly complex communities. The episode also examines music as an embodied activity involving sound, movement, emotion, and shared attention, while considering its relationship with language and other forms of human communication. Ultimately, the discussion asks whether music should be understood as a deeply rooted human capacity that helped shape the way we connect, cooperate, and make meaning together. Auditory Cheesecake: The Evolution and Structure of Music

Why does music matter so much to us? In this episode, we explore Steven Pinker’s famous claim that music is “auditory cheesecake.” Pinker argues that music may not be an evolutionary adaptation at all, but rather a human invention that takes advantage of mental abilities that evolved for other purposes. We look at how music draws on language, hearing, movement, pattern recognition, and emotion, and how the brain turns sound into rhythm, meter, grouping, and musical structure. Pinker’s argument raises a fascinating question: if music was not necessary for our survival, why has it become such a powerful and important part of human life? Watch the bonus video here. Cecil Sharp and the Curation of English Folksong

Cecil Sharp's work in collecting English folksong is examined through a Marxist lens, revealing it as a project deeply intertwined with British nationalism and cultural hegemony. The analysis argues that Sharp's curation was not a neutral act but selectively shaped a vision of Englishness that reinforced class hierarchies and imperialist ideologies. Sharp's focus on rural traditions and sanitization of lyrics served to depoliticize folk music, making it palatable for the bourgeoisie and obscuring the realities of working-class life. The essay suggests that Sharp's construction of British identity served to assert the superiority of English traditions, contrasting them with other cultures. Ultimately, the text encourages a critical re-evaluation of Sharp's legacy, advocating for a reclamation of folk traditions as expressions of working-class resistance and collective memory. The Social Life of Musical Instruments

Eliot Bates's "The Social Life of Musical Instruments" explores how musical instruments are more than just tools. The author draws on literary examples, ethnomusicological studies, and personal encounters to argue that instruments have agency and play active roles in social interactions. Bates examines the Turkish saz, illustrating how it mediates social relations, shapes identities, and embodies cultural values. He challenges traditional organology, advocating for a "lived organology" that considers the dynamic relationships between instruments, humans, and the broader socio-historical context. The study draws on actor-network theory and material culture studies to analyze how instruments mobilize communities, negotiate cultural meanings, and participate in social and political processes. Ultimately, the work encourages ethnomusicologists to examine the vibrant lives of musical instruments and their implications for understanding culture, society, and human-object relations. Show Intro - What is Ethnomusicology?

Ethnomusicology is an interdisciplinary field studying music within its cultural context. The discipline evolved from comparative musicology and anthropology, emphasizing music as a social practice. Key figures like Alan Lomax, Bruno Nettl, and Mantle Hood significantly shaped its theoretical and methodological frameworks. Today, ethnomusicology examines diverse musical forms globally using fieldwork, archival research, and digital technologies. The field grapples with decolonization, globalization's impact, equitable representation, and AI's role in music. Despite these challenges, ethnomusicology remains vital for preserving and understanding diverse musical traditions. Houston Creative Media (https://houstoncreativemedia.com)
