Abner is dead.
The strongest man supporting Saul's remaining dynasty has been murdered by Joab. When the news reaches Ish-bosheth, his courage collapses, and Israel is thrown into confusion.
Then two military captains, Baanah and Rechab, see an opportunity.
They enter Ish-bosheth's house during the heat of the day, murder him while he rests, cut off his head and travel through the night to David at Hebron.
They expect a reward.
Their reasoning appears simple: Ish-bosheth stood between David and the throne. Therefore, killing him must help David fulfil God's promise.
But they have fundamentally misunderstood David.
For the third time, David is presented with the death of someone whose removal could advance his kingship.
Saul dies.
Abner dies.
Now Ish-bosheth dies.
And for the third time David refuses to build his throne upon bloodshed.
This episode also introduces a child whose story will become one of the most beautiful pictures of covenant kindness in David's life:
Mephibosheth.

The civil conflict continues, but the balance of power is changing.
Scripture declares:
“The house of Saul grew weaker and weaker, while the house of David grew stronger and stronger.”
David's promised kingdom is emerging. Yet 2 Samuel 3 refuses to present this transition as clean or uncomplicated.
Abner, the powerful commander supporting Saul's house, quarrels with Ish-bosheth and decides to transfer his allegiance to David. Michal is returned to David at his demand, but her husband Paltiel follows behind her weeping. Abner negotiates national unity. David receives him peacefully.
Then Joab intervenes.
Driven by vengeance for his brother Asahel, Joab murders Abner at Hebron.
Suddenly David faces a profound leadership crisis. God's promise is advancing, but someone close to him has used bloodshed to advance it.

David is now king over Judah, but Israel remains divided.
In the north, Abner has established Ish-bosheth, Saul's son, as king. In the south, Judah follows David. Two houses belonging to the same covenant people now face each other across a pool at Gibeon.
What begins as a contest between twenty-four young warriors becomes bloodshed. Bloodshed becomes pursuit. Pursuit becomes personal tragedy when Asahel, Joab's younger brother, refuses to stop chasing Abner and is killed.
By evening, Israelites are killing Israelites.
Then Abner cries out one of the most haunting questions in the books of Samuel:
הֲלָנֶצַח תֹּאכַל חֶרֶב
Halānetzaḥ tokhal cherev?
“Shall the sword devour forever?”
