Pensiones were initially established with the aim of creating an institution that would welcome Spanish artists who moved to the city of Rome under the protection of the king. The first group of pensionados arrived in Rome in 1758, under the director Francisco Preciado de la Vega. Le pensioni erano state inizialmente stabilite allo scopo di finanziare gli artisti spagnoli che dimoravano a Roma prima che venisse fondata la Reale Accademia di Spagna. Queste ultime servivano a garantire loro stabilità economica e protezione in suolo italico permettendo agli artisti di concentrarsi sui loro studi. Il primo gruppo di Pensionados giunse a Roma nel 1758 sotto le direttive di  Francisco Preciado de la Vega.
