The Cooperative Economy – Can Workers Own the Companies They Build

Episode 61 examines worker cooperatives as an alternative way of organizing ownership and power inside businesses. In a worker cooperative, employees are not only workers but also member-owners who can participate in major decisions, elect leadership, and share in the profits created by the enterprise. The episode explains how cooperatives challenge the traditional separation between labor and capital. Instead of workers earning wages while outside shareholders control the company, ownership is shared among the people who actually do the work. Examples such as the Mondragon network show that cooperative ownership can operate on a large scale, even in complex and competitive industries. At the same time, cooperatives face serious challenges. They often struggle to raise capital, democratic decision-making can become more difficult as organizations grow, and they still operate within competitive markets that can force difficult choices about automation, wages, and survival. Ultimately, worker cooperatives show that the corporation is not a fixed economic structure. Ownership can be designed differently. The deeper question is not only how profits are distributed, but who has the right to make decisions inside the institutions that shape people’s working lives.

The Next Economic System – What Comes After Capitalism

Episode 60 explores what an economic system beyond today’s form of capitalism might look like. Rather than assuming capitalism will suddenly disappear, the episode examines how economic systems historically evolve through changing institutions, technologies, ownership structures, and political choices. Possible alternatives include stronger social democracy, wider public or cooperative ownership, social wealth funds, universal basic services, and new forms of technologically assisted planning. Artificial intelligence and automation could make production more efficient, but they also raise a central question: who owns the machines, data, and productive systems that generate future wealth? The episode also considers ecological economics and the possibility that future societies may measure prosperity through health, security, leisure, resilience, and environmental stability rather than endless growth alone. Each alternative brings trade-offs, from bureaucratic concentration and political capture to financing problems, inequality, and technological surveillance. Ultimately, the next economic system may not completely replace markets or private enterprise. It could emerge as a hybrid combining markets, public institutions, cooperatives, automation, universal services, and broader ownership of capital. The defining issue will be less about what the system is called and more about how economic power, risk, ownership, and productivity gains are distributed.

Universal Basic Income – Solution or Illusion

Episode 59 explores Universal Basic Income as a response to growing economic insecurity, unstable employment, automation, and increasingly complex welfare systems. UBI promises a simple foundation: regular unconditional cash payments that give people greater freedom to manage periods of unemployment, caregiving, retraining, or career transition without immediately falling into poverty. The episode examines evidence from experiments in Finland and the United States, showing that unconditional cash can improve financial security and personal well-being while producing relatively modest changes in employment behavior. It also highlights a deeper debate over how economic success should be measured: not only through hours worked, but also through autonomy, caregiving, reduced stress, and the ability to refuse exploitative work. At the same time, UBI faces major challenges. A meaningful national program would be expensive, and its effects would depend heavily on taxation, existing welfare programs, housing supply, inflation, and public services. A flat payment cannot replace specialized support for disability, healthcare, education, or severe housing costs, and poorly designed UBI could allow landlords or other asset owners to capture part of the benefit. Ultimately, the episode presents Universal Basic Income as neither a miracle solution nor an empty illusion. Its value depends on the broader economic system surrounding it. UBI may strengthen economic security and individual choice, but it cannot by itself solve structural inequality, concentrated ownership, or unequal access to essential services. The debate therefore leads to a larger question: if income can be redistributed, should societies also reconsider how wealth and ownership are distributed?
