   Vietnam War: Soldiers (Part 7)

   In the last episode, we covered the problems of the Marines up in "I Corps" on the border of North and South Vietnam. In this one, I would like to stick with the theme that the Vietnam War offered a very different experience to the different kinds of troops that fought in it. Further south, the soldiers of the Army were deployed, patrolling rice paddies, dikes, and forested jungle areas in the heart of South Vietnam. The average soldier in this environment faced challenges unlike many others in the war, and this is dedicated to his experience.

They'll give us some supplies and we'll move to the next phase. Well, They'll make a plan like that, and then what actually happens is they mass their 500 guys, and there's 300 Americans and all these South Vietnamese, and the people don't help them out at all. Not at all. That was a major miscalculation by Le Zouan, the North Vietnamese leadership. Much as they do throughout the war, a big chunk of the South Vietnamese regular folks— don't want to come out too strong on one side or the other because they fear what's going to happen to them if they do that, as they should.
