The Los Angeles Unified School District’s Student Empowerment Unit is proud to present the Education Empowered! Podcast. A podcast created by students for students. Our goal is to amplify the voices of L.A. Unified students and empower youth with information, practical tips, and guidance on important topics. We will keep students informed of District updates and highlight students making significant contributions to our district community. During each episode, guest speakers, experts, and other students will discuss various topics.
This episode is dedicated to our Black peers and their families. Dr. Robert Whitman, Educational Transformation Officer with LA Unified, shares information about programs such as the Black Student Achievement Plan (BSAP) that are in place to support Black students. We also talk about some of the black leaders we admire, and we discuss why it is important to highlight diverse cultural perspectives in the classroom.

LA Unified’s Student Bill of Rights
During this episode, we proudly introduce the Student Bill of Rights, the official document outlining students' rights in LA Unified. We share how the Student Bill of Rights was developed, explain its importance, and introduce each of the rights. We also discuss the responsibilities that accompany student rights and consider the Student Bill of Rights’ impact on educational equity.

Celebrating Asian Pacific Culture
During this episode, we have the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Derrick Chau, Senior Executive Director of the Strategy and Innovation Office of the Los Angeles Unified School District. We discuss why it is essential for students to learn about their culture. We share our favorite cultural traditions, such as celebrating Chuseok, Doljanchi, and Chinese New Year. We explore some of the most common misconceptions about Asians and explain how we can change that narrative through education. Finally, we share information about LAUSD’s Ethnic Studies Curriculum and the Asian Pacific Islander Desi American (APIDA) Studies Course.

Dangers of Fentanyl
For this episode, we invited Doctor Smita Malhotra, Medical Director of the Los Angeles Unified School District. Dr. Malhotra explains what fentanyl is and why it is extremely dangerous. We also explore the signs of drug abuse and provide information about Naloxone, a medication designed to reverse opioid overdose. Finally, we discuss how students can get support and information about prevention methods such as handling peer pressure and engaging in mindfulness.

Celebrating Latino/a/x Heritage and Diversity
For this episode, we invited LAUSD Board Member Mónica García and Ambassador Marcela Celorio, Consul General of Mexico in Los Angeles. We engaged in a conversation to elevate the Latino culture and to recognize the contributions of Latinos, Latinas, and Latinx folks. We discussed information about Latino History Month and shared ideas on how schools can celebrate Latino Culture. Our guests discussed ways to increase the visibility of Latino achievements, shared the significance of the East L.A walkouts and discussed the new ethnic studies course. In addition, we reviewed leadership opportunities for students.

Let’s get ready for college!
For this episode, we invited Ms. Brenda Pensamiento, a Secondary Administrator for the Los Angeles Unified School District, to share information about preparing for college. We discussed the importance of having a solid support system and of participating in extracurricular activities. Ms. Pensamiento explained the A-G requirements and provided information about the SAT and ACT tests, dual enrollment, and the benefits of attending a community college. We also reviewed the college admissions process, financial aid, and scholarships.

During this episode, we invited Mr. Joel Cisneros, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and the Director of School Mental Health at the Los Angeles Unified School District. He provided a standard definition of mental health, explained why it is essential to maintain a healthy state of mind, and shared information on how mental health affects all aspects of life. In addition, he provided strategies and resources that students can access to thrive academically and socially.
