The EduCurious Podcast with Vanessa Hernandez, Chief of Retail Delivery at MIDFLORIDA Credit Union
What happens when education, financial literacy, workforce development, and community partnership come together?
In this episode of The EduCurious Podcast, Dr. Amber Love Johnson sits down with Vanessa Hernandez, Chief of Retail Delivery at MIDFLORIDA Credit Union, to explore the connections between education, financial literacy, leadership, and preparing the next generation for the workforce.
MIDFLORIDA’s story has deep roots in education. Founded in 1954 as a teachers’ credit union, the organization has grown into a statewide financial institution while continuing to invest in schools, educators, employees, and the communities it serves.
Vanessa shares how MIDFLORIDA approaches financial literacy for students and families, partners with schools and universities, and develops employees through training, mentorship, and opportunities for advancement. She also takes us beyond the traditional image of banking to explore careers in technology, data analytics, fraud prevention, marketing, lending, facilities, business services, and more.
The conversation turns toward the future as Vanessa and Dr. Johnson ask an important question: What skills will today’s students actually need for tomorrow’s workforce?
As AI, technology, and automation continue to reshape industries, technical knowledge matters, but so do communication, interpersonal skills, adaptability, self-awareness, mentorship, and the ability to keep learning.
Vanessa also shares a powerful leadership philosophy: develop people for where they want to go, not simply where they are today.
For educators, leaders, parents, and anyone thinking about how we prepare young people for life beyond the classroom, this conversation offers a valuable reminder that education is a shared responsibility. Schools, businesses, universities, families, and communities all have something to contribute.
Because sometimes the best educational conversations happen when we become curious about the people and organizations beyond the classroom.
