About Egotastic FunTime!

How is technology changing what it means to be human? Egotastic FunTime: The ReLoaded Cut is a smart, funny podcast about artificial intelligence, digital privacy, streaming, Hollywood, fandom and the strange modern world we’re all trying to survive together. I’m JP, and each story-driven episode explores how technology affects the way we work, watch, connect—and decide what’s real. Along the way, science fiction and pop culture help us examine the future we’re building and whether humanity is actually ready for it. One idea. One story. About ten minutes. Thoughtful conversations. Honest opinions. No outrage bait. Finding light in the darkness… with laser beams.

   Why Streaming Is Breaking Fandom...

Streaming changed television forever — but it may also be quietly killing the communities that form around it. In this episode of Egotastic FunTime, JP looks at how 8-episode seasons, multi-year gaps, binge releases, and shorter runs are making it harder for fandoms to grow, connect, and stay excited between seasons. Shows used to have time to breathe. Characters had more room to develop. Fans had months to talk, speculate, argue, rewatch, and build a community around what they loved. Now, a season can arrive, disappear in a weekend, and leave fans waiting two or three years for the next chapter. So what happens to fandom when the conversation ends almost as soon as it begins? This episode explores how modern streaming habits are changing television, why longer seasons helped fandom thrive, and whether the current model is actually hurting the shows it was supposed to help. If you love television, science fiction, fandom, streaming, or pop culture, this one is for you. Why Short Sci-Fi Seasons Hurt Fandom...

Are short sci-fi TV seasons making it harder to build lasting fandoms? Why do streaming shows give us eight or ten episodes, disappear for a year or two, and expect a real community to grow in the space between? In this episode of Egotastic FunTime, I’m talking about the shrinking TV season, the obsession with appealing to “general audiences,” and what gets lost when studios try to make something for everybody instead of making something specific that people can truly love. We get into modern shows like Fallout, Silo, 3 Body Problem, Foundation and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, along with the difference between today’s short seasons and the much longer runs that helped older sci-fi series build lasting communities. I also talk about modern Star Trek, how chasing a broader audience can alienate the people who were already invested, and why eight hours of content can create buzz—but it has a much harder time creating a home for a fandom. That same idea is a huge part of why I moved Egotastic FunTime toward audio-first podcasting. I’m no longer interested in changing the conversation just to keep somebody who doesn’t care about the subject watching for another ten seconds. I want to make the conversation I actually want to have—and find the people who wanted to have that exact conversation too. So what modern sci-fi series do you wish had longer seasons? And what’s the sweet spot: 12 episodes? 14? 16? BONUS: The Orville, AI, and Why Season 4 Is Coming Back at the Perfect Time

What if The Orville understood one of the biggest questions surrounding artificial intelligence before the rest of us started worrying about it? In this episode of Egotastic FunTime: The ReLoaded Cut, I’m looking at Isaac, the Kaylons, and the uncomfortable idea hiding underneath their story. Maybe the danger isn’t simply that artificial intelligence becomes smarter than us. Maybe it’s what intelligent machines learn by watching us. Isaac’s relationships with Claire, Ty, Marcus, and the crew fundamentally change the way he sees biological life. And when you compare that story with the way AI is becoming part of our jobs, relationships, businesses, and everyday lives, The Orville suddenly feels a lot less like science fiction. But there’s another reason this feels like the perfect time to be talking about The Orville. Later in the episode, we get into a new Season 4 production development from the Fox Studios lot, including reports that The Orville is now working out of Stage 14 while its longtime home on Stage 15 is being used by another production. We still don’t have the big official “cameras are rolling” announcement, but physical production activity is a lot more interesting than another round of rumors. And if The Orville really is preparing to return, a show that spent years exploring AI, technology, humanity, and the consequences of the things we create may be coming back at exactly the right moment.
