You gotta Groove - Pete Antunes Drummer of Tower of Power
Die Folge ist auf Englisch, daher auch die Beschreibung der Folge: It is Pete Antunes - it is Tower of Power!!! There are a few bands that truly changed me. Queen was one of them — I was eight years old, listening to Spread Your Little Wings whenever I’d had a rough day. Then The Righteous and the Wicked whenever I wanted to feel Hot and Chili Funky. You’re Like a Doll Knife when I was filled with anger about… well, anything (and wow, that happened a lot during puberty). Cannonball Adderley when I felt a little jazzy — and of course, for all the funky and groovy times: Tower of Power. One of my absolute favorite bands including there GROOVES! Some time ago, the news spread that David Garibaldi would no longer be playing with TOP and that his successor would be Pete Antunes. When I saw that the band would be coming to Cologne with Pete, it was clear: this dream had to come true. And what can I say — it did. For Pete, playing with Tower of Power; and for Alex (Vesper) and me, getting the chance to talk with him. What followed was a wonderfully warm conversation about the challenge of playing on Jonathan Moffett’s drum set, how exhausting music theory can be, and why Tower of Power came along at exactly the right moment… even if Pete didn’t quite believe who was calling him at first. Was denken Bassisten eigentlich über Drummer...?
Was denken Basser eigentlich über uns Drummer, haben die überhaupt eine Meinung. Denn eigentlich sollte das ja das wesentliche Element sein: Der Bass in Zusammenspiel mit den Drums. Aber häufig bleibt dieser Viersaiter-Spieler eher das unbekannte Element in der Band. Und so dachte ich mir, es ist doch mal eine spannende Frage, zu verstehen, was er macht und vor allem, was er oder sie über uns denkt und sich vom perfekten Drummer wünschen würde. Und so habe ich mir einen der jungen aufstrebenden Bassisten geholt und ihn mal gefragt, was er schätzt an Drummern, welche Funktion sie haben in der Band und was das Zusammenspiel erst ruichtig gut macht. Der Bassist, um den es hier geht, ist Sebastian Nöcker, derzeit auf Welttounee mit Funky Times, eine junge Band, dieGroovees und den Style alter funk Musik feirt und virtuos umsetzt. Morgens Sozialarbeit und Abends die Rock am Ring Bühne - Sascha Hornung
Es gibt auch die anderen Geschichten. Nicht die des Musikers, der in einer Musikerfamilie aufgewachsen ist und schon mit drei Jahren das erste Mal zusammen mit seinen Neffen und Tanten auf der Bühne stand. Wo es nur eine Frage der Zeit ist, bis sich die Karriere so unausweichlich entwickelt wie der Sieg Spaniens gegen Kap Verde bei einer Fußball-WM. Es gibt auch die Geschichte von Sascha. Beide Eltern leben in einem kleinen Haus am Rande von Berlin, lieben Musik, gehen ganz normal zur Arbeit und verdienen gerade so viel, dass das Leben ein Kindertraum-Leben ist – aber nicht genug, um dem kleinen Sascha einen Nintendo 64 zu kaufen. Darum gibt es vom Papa die Challenge: Sascha, spiel „Everlong“ von den Foo Fighters und du bekommst dat Dingen! Gesagt, getan... Und nach der Schule war klar: Es geht nicht unbedingt an irgendeine Uni, um Musik zu studieren – soziale Arbeit stand auf dem Programm. Und so ist Sascha heute auf der einen Seite einer der beliebtesten Sozialarbeiter an seiner Schule und auf der anderen Seite der Drummer einer der erfolgreichsten linken Crossover-Bands Deutschlands, die mit ihren Songs die ganz großen Festivalbühnen rocken: Kafvka. Wir deshalb sprechen in dieser Episode des Trommel Talks darüber, wie man den Spagat zwischen Arbeit und Festival-Rocker hinbekommt, warum heutzutage auch eine alternative Crossover-Band Zuspieler vom Computer braucht, warum Ariana Grande das Größte ist, wie sich Sascha seine Zukunft vorstellt und ob er jemals einen Nintendo 64 bekommen hat – Spoiler: nein.
