34 Candidates Seek Detroit School Board Seats; Bilingual College Program Comes to Southwest; DCFC Moves Into Third
In this week’s edition of EL PULSO, Detroit voters prepare to elect a new majority of the Detroit Public Schools Community District Board of Education. Thirty-four candidates are running across two races for five seats on the seven-member board, and CitizenDetroit has released interviews with 25 of them to help residents hear directly from the people on the ballot.
We also look at Éxito Educativo, a bilingual program helping Latino students and their families navigate college admissions, financial aid, and academic planning. New workshops begin October 6 at La Casa Guadalupana in Southwest Detroit.

English Learners Face Funding Gap; Southwest Youth Council Recruits; Fiesta Tigres Celebrates Latino Heritage
In this week’s edition of EL PULSO, Detroit homeowners have until September 22 to apply for two city programs offering free repairs to qualifying households. Critical Home Repair can address problems like leaking roofs and broken heating systems, while Detroit LeadSafe focuses on lead hazards in homes with young children or pregnant residents.
We also look at Michigan’s growing investment in English learners. The state increased funding by $12.5 million this school year, but around 24,000 students still fall into a gap where schools are required to provide language support without receiving additional state funding.
In Southwest Detroit, Congress of Communities is recruiting new members for its Latinx Youth Council. The two-year leadership program will help young people follow local school board meetings and speak up about issues affecting their education.
