Dear Ivory: What I Wish I Knew Before Autism Changed Our Lives Ep. 100

https://linktr.ee/embracingneurodiversity https://www.instagram.com/embracingneuro_diversity/ Books & Curriculum: https://payhip.com/EmbracingNeuroDiversityLLC 100 episodes. One letter to the woman I used to be. For Episode 100 of Learning Curves & Coffee, I wanted to do something different. Instead of another lesson, list, or how-to, I went back to the beginning, before the autism diagnosis, therapy appointments, IEPs, advocacy, books, business, and everything I know now and asked: What would today’s Ivory tell the mother I was then? The answer became “Dear Ivory.”In this deeply personal episode, I reflect on raising my son Caleel, learning to understand autism and neurodiversity, navigating systems and relationships, redefining progress, finding myself within motherhood, and becoming a woman an earlier version of me could only imagine. If you’re raising a neurodivergent child, adjusting to a diagnosis, navigating a season you didn’t plan for, or simply realizing that life has changed you along the way, this conversation is for you. In this episode: -What I wish I knew before my son’s autism diagnosis -The emotional and practical realities families don’t always talk about - Letting go of expectations without letting go of hope - Learning to see progress differently. -The invisible weight of appointments, therapy, advocacy, and caregiving. -Remembering who you are outside of motherhood. -What 100 episodes have taught me about Discovery, Acceptance & Embracing. One of my biggest lessons after 100 episodes: Remember who you are. But make room for who you’re becoming. Welcome to Episode 100. Thank you for growing with me. Prepare Your Perspective: Creating Neurodiverse-Friendly Classrooms (Bonus Episode)

https://linktr.ee/embracingneurodiversityInstagram | https://www.instagram.com/embracingneuro_diversity/Facebook | https://www.facebook.com/EmbracingNeuroDiversityllc/Books & Curriculum: https://payhip.com/EmbracingNeuroDiversityLLCIn this episode of Learning Curves and Coffee, Ivory challenges educators to focus less on having the prettiest classroom and more on creating a safe, neurodiverse-friendly space where every child can learn. Drawing on her experience as a teacher, counselor, assistant principal, district coach, and parent of an autistic child, she reframes behavior as information and communication rather than identity, emphasizing that kids do well if they can. Ivory introduces a “discovery, acceptance, and embracing” framework, encourages connection before compliance, and shares practical tools: audit the classroom for predictability and sensory supports, make accommodations like movement breaks, learn the child through family input, communicate strengths regularly, and send a strength-first welcome message. She closes by highlighting that belonging and accommodations remove barriers without lowering expectations.00:00 Show Intro00:23 Prepping Beyond Decor01:51 Reputation Before Arrival04:04 Behavior Is Information05:37 Connection Before Compliance07:11 Design Neurodiverse Spaces08:54 Globe Story Accommodations11:46 Know Child First13:47 Strength First Outreach15:28 Embracing Belonging Close

Using a case study of Eileen and her autistic daughter Shirleen, she encourages parents to start the year prepared rather than perfect by naming what they’re carrying from past school experiences and choosing to begin again. Ivory emphasizes that strong family-school partnerships are built on trust through conversation, offers a practical tool to “write your child’s story” with a strength-based one-pager, and shares strategies for preparing routines for the first month, supporting regulation, communicating with curiosity, and resetting before difficult emails or meetings.00:00 Welcome to Episode 9901:19 Why Back to School Hits Hard02:55 Meet Eileen and Shirleen04:48 Start Prepared Not Perfect06:12 Build Trust With Schools07:18 Tell Your Child Story First10:59 Acceptance and Real Control12:49 Plan the First Month17:03 Connection After School18:36 Partnership Over Battle20:09 The Parent Reset Pause21:09 New Year New Beginning22:14 October Progress Check In23:21 Closing Thanks and Takeaways24:41 Final Encouragement Send Love
