Learn Songs At Super Speeds, 7 Day Charting Challenge, and Penguin Shunts

Take my 7 Day Charting Challenge (https://www.EmilyIsLive.com/11) Imagine hearing a song just once and then playing it to absolute perfection! Mastering this skill will easily put you in the top 1% of all professional musicians. What’s the quickest way you learn songs? We’ve all been there, either on an audition, before a rehearsal or even a gig - a new song is thrown our way, we’ve never heard it before, and we don’t know if it’s even possible to learn it in the time frame! Learning quickly can easily be the difference between getting a gig and not, and no-one wants to be the weakest link in the band saying ‘no I can’t do that’. Over the last 15 years or so, I’ve used one technique to take hold of more opportunities than anything else, and it’s so simple. It’s not easy at first, but with practice, will be second nature, and you can impress people with something that may seem like a magical skill! Join me on Emily Is Live as I share how I learnt to play whole sets of songs to huge audiences on multiple occasions, with multiple artists after hearing each song just once.

Turn Your Strengths Into Superpowers, Drum Solos and Final Fantasy 7!

****Join the next livestream by registering at EmilyisLive.com**** Why focus on what you’re bad at when you can be a supercharged version of what comes easiest? Imagine being the most incredible version of yourself, having more fun and with great ease, whilst noticing others gazing at you with admiration wondering ‘how did they get so incredible?!’ Are you the one looking constantly left and right, being amazed at what others are doing, then looking at yourself and feeling insecure, unworthy and useless? You can work on all the things you’re bad at, and get them a little better to maybe match up to those you see around you thriving, or you can focus on your natural strengths and supercharge those for the win! I was someone who always used to look left and right to what others were doing. When I was younger, there wasn’t really any social media, but there were plenty of other drummers I knew and hung out with that would leave me longing to play like they did as I was always in awe of them. When I hit my late teens and early twenties, social media was in full swing and I was scrolling, looking at what everyone else was doing, the gospel chops, the polyrhythms, the linear fills at a million miles an hour, the swinging jazz players, the incredible musicians' others were playing with, I wasn’t doing any of it, which by default (in my head) meant I wasn’t good enough. Why would anyone ever want to play with me?! The change came for me when I was faced with nothing. A big old empty diary, knowing no one would call for a while, and I thought ‘well this could be a fresh start for me’. Rather than sitting and looking at what everyone else was doing, and wanting to do that, I thought ‘what do I want to be doing? What do I love? What comes naturally to me? What is fun? What is easy?’ I realised all those players I was looking towards, although amazing, did not bring me joy as other things did - actually they mainly brought anxiety! The thing that brought me pure joy and that came fairly naturally was simply: playing songs. I doubled down on this idea, and honed in on the kinds of songs I loved most, work started flowing, and more begot more. An interesting shift happened for me in that I realised although there is a great benefit to strengthening your weaknesses, the resulting action is still focusing on the worst parts of your playing, and for me, that’s a sure path down the ‘bad mental health route’. However focusing on strengths brings confidence and not only that, you start becoming the best version of yourself in every way. Download my 'What Are Your Strengths?' 5 Keys To Social Media, Mexico City and Badgers

Join the conversation LIVE at EmilyisLive.com How can you supercharge your social media presence? There’s no getting around it, social media is now a huge part of our lives, and not only that, how the world perceives us. The last thing we want is to look lame, incompetent, or even worse, just have no one see us at all! I am someone who has been in the pits of despair with social media, feeling like a failure, not having any followers, any eyeballs, and every time I would open an app, the lack of likes or comments just solidified to me that I was useless, and not good enough for anyone. As time went on, and I delved more into social media, I realized that actually, it wasn’t me inherently that was the problem, it was my understanding of what the platforms were FOR! Once I understood that, things took off in a big way, and since then I see social media as one of the most important parts of my success in the music industry. Take Promo Shots Like A Pro, Gigging With Bono, and Joke Working With Kim Wilde

Join the conversation LIVE at EmilyisLive.com Have you ever looked at shots from a gig and realised you’re not in any of them, in the dark in the background or if they got you, you seem to have a cymbal as a head?! In the first 10 years of playing the drums, I had 1 shot that I didn’t hate and could use for promo shots, but it wasn’t great, and it was the only 1! In the 10 years that followed I worked out I could take my OWN shots and not only that, get the most dynamic amazing pictures that I was proud of and depicted me how I wanted! Showcasing yourself through great photos can be the difference between getting gigs, followers and fans vs just blending into the background - literally. Join me as I share with you how to take shots you are proud of, these can be live or set up in a studio. All you need is your phone! Join the conversation LIVE at EmilyisLive.com

Quantity vs Quality, Backslang, and Georgian Awesomeness!

*** Be part of the conversation LIVE by signing up at EmilyisLive.com (https://www.EmilyIsLive.com) *** What’s the best way to level up the quality of your work? Sure we want to do the best we can at everything we do, but what if we can’t reach the quality we’re striving for, to the point of giving up on a project, or maybe not starting at all? Up until the age of around 21, I was obsessed with being perfect. I wanted to be the perfect drummer, with the perfect gig, and to the extreme of wanting to be perfect going into a coffee shop, knowing where everything was and not looking like a fool! It was exhausting and ultimately led to complete debilitation, inaction, and effectively depression. At the time I was completely obsessed with reading successful musicians’ biographies and trying to find patterns to discover the secret to being a professional drummer. The only running theme I could see was that they were all out playing, a lot, a LOT a lot. So my focus shifted from ‘being perfect’ to just doing it a lot! Playing gigs, doing rehearsals, tours, recording sessions, stage shows, drum clinics, just anything and everything because at that point I realised quantity = quality. Since that discovery (and putting it into action), the trajectory of my life has changed and now if I decide I want to learn something or be better at it, I just do it a LOT. And I still often surprise myself with how quickly things start progressing. *** Be part of the conversation LIVE by signing up at EmilyisLive.com (https://www.EmilyIsLive.com) ***

Discover Your Dream Job, Wretched Rehearsals, and Astronauts

*** Be part of the conversation - sign up at EmilyisLive.com *** How can you discover your dream job? Imagine waking up excited for every day, doing what you love, and feeling fulfilled! Back in 2015, I was living the life I’d dreamed of when I was a kid - I was a professional drummer, I was touring, recording, seeing the world, and playing with household names... but I wasn’t happy. I sat down with myself and went through questions that helped me understand why I was feeling unfulfilled, which has led me to this spot right now, feeling happier than I ever could imagine! Listen to this week’s episode on ‘Emily is Live!’ as I share those questions, my answers, and discuss how to maximise the love you have for the things you do by focusing on a few key questions, rather than just carry on doing more of what makes you unhappy, and possibly not even realising why. Harnessing Negative Thoughts, Height Restricted Gigs, and Banana on Pizza,

How can you make your negative thoughts work for you? Imagine knowing that your inner monologue or negative thoughts can work with you, motivate you, and give you that extra fire to achieve things that you never thought possible. Instead, those negative thoughts can often hijack you, making you lose confidence in yourself, what you’re doing, and maybe even to the point of complete debilitation! I’m someone who has lived my life with an underlining belief that ‘I’m not good enough’. Now without turning this into a therapy session, I’ve learnt over the past couple of decades or so, that holding that inherently negative belief, and all the thoughts surrounding it, has worked in my favour (even when it felt incredibly painful!) in carving out a career. More recently I’ve learnt to actively USE those horrible words to work in my favour when I choose and push my abilities, opportunities and career. Instead of your negative thoughts being your downfall, there is a way to harness them to your advantage.

Free Work And Leveraging Your Imposter Syndrome

*** Be part of the discussion LIVE (https://www.EmilyIsLive.com) *** Should you do free work? As I look back on my career so far, I recognise that I have done a lot of free work and I can confidently say it’s a big part of the reason I am where I am today. Inevitably, it’s easy to see being asked to do something for free as taking advantage, disrespectful, or as something no one should ever do! I see it a little differently. If you can reframe it in a positive way, actually, free work can be of as much benefit to you as someone else. Growth Opportunity! if you don’t have the skills, no one will hire you. Use free work to get as much experience as possible in the field you want to be in, and then in the peripheral skills you might not even know about yet that will make you more valuable. This can also be transferred over to genres or ‘scenes’ you want to be playing in. Connecting You can be the greatest player in your bedroom, but that ain’t gonna get you working! Use free work as an excuse to expand your network, meet new people, new fans. No one will take a shot on an unknown, so go out there and make some friends by doing some work for free. Promotion Visibility is key! Either make sure whatever you’re doing inherently exposes you to a wider audience, and/or leverage the work to share on your social media to keep top of mind for other potential work that you will be paid for! Also, there’s nothing more desirable than someone who is busy and in demand. BUT BE WARNED! With every opportunity, ask yourself: What is the time/reward ratio? What is the amount of time and energy you will have to commit, and what is the potential reward for you? Is it worth it for what you will gain in return? If the answer is no, maybe move away from that request. If it’s a yes, then… Set a limit Always set boundaries for yourself, ie how long you plan to stay with an opportunity before you reassess if it’s still serving you, and also what you’re willing to do within your role. The Bonus Secret Sauce? Find opportunities that can hit more than one of the Growth, Connection and Visibility areas and you’ll be getting so much more value than just a few notes in your pocket! *** Be part of the discussion LIVE (https://www.EmilyIsLive.com) ***

Introduction, Count Me In, and curry pizza!

*** Be a part of the conversation LIVE! Register now! (https://www.EmilyIsLive.com) *** Where can you go to find inspiration, motivation and support when things get tough? Imagine knowing you have a community to turn to and ask advice when you're struggling, and when things are great to celebrate with! In this space, you can belong, be valued, and find your tribe of like-minded people. Welcome to Emily Is Live! When I was younger didn’t know where to turn to become a professional musician, but luckily I had an obsessive incessant hunger to find out, so started researching bios, interviews, documentaries and talking to professional drummers and instrumentalists to find the common threads that got them to where I could only dream of being! And it worked! I've been lucky enough to call myself a professional drummer since 2008, playing with legendary artists such as Bryan Ferry, The Darkness, Kim Wilde, Howard Jones, Thompson Twins' Tom Bailey, Tricky, been the house drummer on The Voice Kids since 2019, featured on episodes of Peppa Pig and even a show with U2's Bono! I've been very lucky, to say the least! Despite all the successes I've had, there have still been times that were tough, sometimes taking me to the brink of giving up the drums completely. My mental health has also suffered, and I have often felt completely alone and like no one could understand or help. Emily Is Live! is the thing I wish existed all those times I didn't know where to turn. Each week I will talk on a subject answering a question from you via EmilyIsLive.com (https://www.EmilyIsLive.com) - then, it's over to the community to answer questions in real-time to delve deeper into that subject or something else completely off topic! If you want to join us live then just subscribe at EmilyIsLive.com (https://www.EmilyIsLive.com) and get a watch link on the day! If you don't, that's cool too, just subscribe to this podcast and watch the chaos unfold. *** Don't forget to watch the new Netflix documentary, Count Me In, featuring Emily (https://www.netflix.com/gb/title/81450094?s=i&trkid=13747225&vlang=en&clip=81477385) ***
