Tom Cruise Week + Digger and Verity Reviews (Cocktail, The Firm, American Made)
You couldn’t keep us out of the theater this week! October is full of new releases, and we were excited to catch Digger and Verity on their opening weekend. The reviews for Digger were definitely mixed, but we were looking forward to judging for ourselves. Unlike the majority of critics, we enjoyed it and found humor throughout. Tom Cruise gives a great performance and there are a couple twists in the film that surprise you upon first watch. In an earlier episode, Hannah discussed how she read Verity and what she thought of it being made into a film. To prep for its release, Ailish listened to the audiobook so she could have the full Colleen Hoover experience. Unfortunately, we were both left disappointed by many aspects of the film. One positive is that Anne Hathaway is certainly giving it her all even though she hardly moves through the whole film.
To go along with the release of Digger, we thought we’d have a Tom Cruise Week. We’ve watched some of his films for other episodes and tried to get selections spanning multiple decades. Cocktail is from 1988 and to say this takes an unexpected turn is an understatement. We could watch Cruise throw drinks around all day long, so we’re not sure why some choices were made as they were in the second half of this one. The Firm was a film we’ve heard about, but never seen over the years. We both agreed that this was thrilling and fun, and it was great to see Cruise and Gene Hackman working beside each other. It’s amazing how many iconic stars Cruise has worked with throughout his career! Lastly, we have American Made. We don’t know about you, but we can confidently say we had never heard of this 2017 film. While it was an interesting story based on the real life of Barry Seal, there were some odd choices with the cinematography and editing. Nevertheless, it’s always fun to see Cruise flying airplanes.

Men Behaving Badly + Primetime Review (A Clockwork Orange, American Psycho, Joker)
We were so excited to see Primetime in theaters last weekend! On this week’s episode of the podcast, we give our review on that film and review a couple other films where men are going off the rails. There was also the announcement Zach Cregger’s new project, The Flood, will star Jennifer Lawrence. We’ve heard that Cregger is really passionate about this film, and we look forward to Lawrence in a sci-fi thriller.
Everyone has been talking about Robert Pattinson’s performance in Primetime, and we finally got to see it for ourselves. We thought he did a great job of portraying Chris Hansen and slowly becoming more and more unhinged as the film goes on. The overall look of Primetime really embodied the early 2000s and almost felt dream-like. Merritt Weaver and Skyler Gisondo also give really memorable performances and enhance the film as a whole. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to read the original article this film is based on since we don’t have a Variety subscription, but we did some other research which we discuss parallel to the film adaptation. A Clockwork Orange is a controversial film from 1971. While there are many disturbing scenes, we felt Stanley Kubrick’s world building was really impressive. The plot of the film is also really thought provoking, and Hannah said the book was even more so. American Psycho is another film that has some rough scenes, but the performances keep you coming back for more. Christian Bale is perfectly cast as Patrick Bateman because he’s handsome, charismatic, and at times, scary. This is another film where we’re interested in reading the book! Finally, we have Joker. There’s no denying that Joaquin Phoenix gives a dedicated performance, but the mental health struggles depicted in the film left us feeling really upset. We enjoyed the first 2/3s of this one, but the final third really lost us.

Films Adaptations of Video Games + Resident Evil Review (Mortal Kombat, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider)
On this week’s episode of Two Girl Cinema Club, we’re excited to discuss Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil! We did try to watch the original Resident Evil even though we know it’s not the same as the 2026 version, but it wasn’t readily available for us to stream. The new version was a lot funnier than we ever expected and it was also scary in the first third. We love what Austin Abrams brought to the role and felt his character was pretty realistic, given the situation he was put in. We also heard some pushback on the humor throughout the film and how it didn’t feel like the video game, but we loved that it felt like we were watching someone else playing and thought there were some really cool shots that stuck out. There were also a few industry announcements that were released this past week, so we discussed those as well.
Continuing with our theme, we watched the original Mortal Kombat. Since we weren’t able to watch the original Resident Evil, this was a great alternative since it was by the same director (Paul W.S. Anderson). This movie was released in 1995 and it showed. It had a campy feel, but we weren’t exactly sure if that was purposeful. Even though this isn’t one we’d watch again, we did feel like it was true to the game. Lara Croft: Tomb Raider is a 2001 film that stemmed from a very popular video game. Who other than Angelina Jolie could play this role? This was well done as a whole, and it really made us miss Angelina the action star.
