Energy Hypocrisy is Rampant as New Pipeline Demand Kicks In

Politicians, Permitting Reform, and the Collapse of Energy Logic In this episode of the Energy Realities podcast, hosts Dr. Tammy Nemeth, Stu Turley, and David Blackmon tackle the rampant contradictions plaguing modern energy policy across North America and beyond. From Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey's sudden reversal on natural gas pipelines to Canada's conflicting signals on oil sands development, the trio exposes how political expediency and ideological inconsistency are undermining energy security, driving up consumer costs, and creating regulatory chaos. With electricity rates soaring, refining capacity collapsing under decades of restrictive policies, and a critical Supreme Court case threatening to reshape the entire oil and gas industry, the hosts argue that the real crisis isn't energy itself—it's the hypocrisy of leaders who claim to champion climate goals while implementing policies that achieve neither environmental nor economic benefits. This roundtable discussion reveals how permitting reform, geopolitical maneuvering, and institutional compromise are reshaping the global energy landscape in ways most people don't understand. 1. Pipeline Hypocrisy in Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey's contradictory stance on natural gas pipelines. She previously opposed Marcellus shale pipelines but now supports a pipeline expansion project, likely due to election pressures. This exemplifies broader political hypocrisy around energy policy. 2. Permitting Reform & Global Energy Policy Discussion of how permitting reform affects not just hydrocarbon development but also renewable energy projects. The UK's approach of allowing national government to override local councils, and Canada's Bill C-69 (the "no pipelines bill") that inadvertently blocks wind and solar installations as well. 3. Energy Costs & Grid Reliability Massachusetts has the 3rd highest electricity rates in the US, partly due to previous anti-pipeline policies. The hosts emphasize that wind and solar on the grid become "parasitic" at scale, increasing consumer costs rather than reducing them. 4. Canadian Energy Projects LNG Canada's Phase 2 investment decision Pacific Link oil pipeline proposal to move oil sands crude to the Pacific coast Concerns about China's involvement and potential diversion of Canadian oil away from the US 5. Diesel Export Ban Threat Discussion of Trump's threatened diesel export ban (now reportedly abandoned). The hosts explain why such a ban would backfire, increasing gasoline and jet fuel prices across the US. 6. Refining Capacity Crisis Decades of net-zero policies have shut down refineries, creating fuel shortages. Only one new refinery is being built (Brownsville, Texas) with Indian investment, as American investors fear policy reversals under future Democratic administrations. 7. Supreme Court Boulder County Case A critical lawsuit where Boulder County, Colorado is suing oil companies for climate damages. If the county prevails, it could create a patchwork of county-level regulations that would devastate the oil and gas industry. 8. Political Hypocrisy & Institutional Compromise Broader concerns about compromised institutions, including the Supreme Court, Congress, and bureaucracy. Discussion of how Democratic policies aim to phase out America's global superpower status rather than strengthen it. 9. African Energy Development Brief mention of positive energy development happening in Africa, contrasting with Western net-zero policies that limit financing for hydrocarbon projects globally. The overarching theme is energy hypocrisy: politicians and institutions claiming environmental goals while implementing policies that harm consumers, increase costs, and weaken energy security. Global Energy Crisis - How Did We Get Here? - RoundTable Edition

In this roundtable discussion, three energy experts examine the perfect storm of policy decisions, geopolitical conflicts, and ideological commitments that have created a global energy crisis. Hosted by Stu Turley of Energy News Beat, with guests Dr. Tammy Nemeth (The Nemeth Report) and David Blackmon (Forbes, Daily Caller), the conversation reveals how decades of environmental regulations, net zero mandates, and refinery closures have left the Western world dangerously dependent on imports—particularly diesel and liquefied natural gas. As Russia's refining capacity crumbles from Ukrainian strikes and Europe shuts down its own refineries in pursuit of climate goals, the EU and UK now find themselves bidding against Asia for energy supplies they once produced domestically. The hosts argue this isn't merely incompetence, but a deliberate strategy of deindustrialization that benefits China while hollowing out Western manufacturing and threatening energy security. From the diesel shortage and investment crisis to geopolitical threats and the hypocrisy of international climate agreements, this episode unpacks how the world arrived at this precarious moment—and what it means for the future. 1. The Global Diesel Crisis The hosts explore how the world reached a critical diesel shortage. Key factors include: Russia's loss of ~60% refining capacity due to the Ukraine war Closure of 375,000 barrels per day of refinery capacity in the EU and UK over the past year Net zero policies making refineries uneconomical in Europe and the UK Europe now forced to import diesel from Asia (South Korea), bidding against other Asian nations 2. Refinery Closures & Energy Policy A central theme is how environmental regulations and net zero policies have eliminated refining capacity: The U.S. hasn't built a new refinery in ~50 years due to permitting barriers Seven of California's refineries are slated to close EU and UK refineries shutting down, with production offshored to Asia Oil production is up 113% globally since 1970, but refinery capacity has declined 3. Net Zero & Deindustrialization The hosts argue net zero policies are intentionally destroying manufacturing: Alignment with net zero is causing job losses (40,000+ already lost in Canada) Deindustrialization is realigning the EU, Canada, and UK toward China for manufacturing Higher investment in renewables doesn't equate to better returns on energy production 4. China's Strategic Advantage China is profiting from Western energy instability by: Controlling supply chains for EV components, solar panels, wind turbines, and batteries Stealing EV technology from Tesla and Volkswagen Playing both sides—investing in coal/natural gas while pushing green energy globally Positioning itself as the supplier for the "green transition" 5. Geopolitical & Security Concerns Attempted attack on a UK military base by suspected Middle Eastern operatives Cyber attacks on 32 tankers Concerns about autonomous vessels being vulnerable to hacking Energy dependency creating national security vulnerabilities 6. Investment Crisis The hosts warn of an impending investment crisis because: Political uncertainty discourages long-term capital investment in energy infrastructure CEOs lack confidence that projects won't be canceled by future administrations Investors are reluctant to fund oil and gas projects due to ESG pressures and climate ideology 7. UN Climate Agreements & International Policy Nigeria's hypocrisy: lecturing on climate change while being a major fossil fuel exporter The $100 billion climate fund and how developing nations game it Article 6 of the Paris Agreement enabling carbon credit trading EU energy rationing proposals (thermostats, public lighting cuts) 8. CO2 & Climate Science Debate The hosts challenge climate narratives: CO2 is beneficial for plant growth (800-1200 ppm ideal for greenhouses) The greening of Earth over 30-40 years linked to increased atmospheric CO2 Distinction between real pollution (particulates) vs. CO2 focus Criticism of conflicted figures like Elon Musk profiting from carbon credits 9. Political & Economic Consequences Potential formation of new trading blocs based on energy policy alignment Canada considering EU association membership, which could break ties with the U.S. Regulatory compliance costs making Canadian businesses uncompetitive with the U.S. Concerns about Mark Carney's influence prioritizing UK/EU/China interests over Canada Check out Dr. Richard Norris Pandreco's Substack: https://pandreco.substack.com/ (https://pandreco.substack.com/) Check out for Stu Turley on The Energy News Beat Substack: https://theenergynewsbeat.substack.com/ (https://theenergynewsbeat.substack.com/) For David Blackmon https://blackmon.substack.com/ (https://blackmon.substack.com/) For Tammy Nemeth https://thenemethreport.substack.com/ (https://thenemethreport.substack.com/)

Refineries Under Fire - Special Guest Dr. Richard Norris Pandreco

Refineries Under Fire: How Policy, Geopolitics, and Climate Ideology Created a Global Energy Crisis In this episode of the Energy Realities podcast, hosts David Blackmon, Stu Turley, and Dr. Tammy Nemeth sit down with Dr. Richard Norris, managing director at Pandrako Advisors and author of the Energy IQ Substack, to unpack the perfect storm threatening global energy security. As diesel and gasoline prices spike worldwide, the conversation reveals a crisis that didn't emerge overnight—it's the result of decades of deliberate policy decisions to shutter Western refining capacity, compounded by wars in Ukraine and Iran, soaring tanker costs, and a financial system engineered to starve the oil industry of capital. Through detailed analysis and sobering case studies from Europe to California to Canada, the panel explores how the world's obsession with net-zero mandates and climate alarmism has left nations dangerously dependent on imports, vulnerable to geopolitical blackmail, and facing the hard reality that there are no quick fixes when refining capacity becomes the bottleneck in the global energy system. 1. Global Refining Capacity Crisis The core focus is the severe shortage of global refining capacity and how it's driving diesel and gasoline prices higher. The hosts explain that while crude oil production remains relatively stable, refining capacity has become the bottleneck. Refineries are operating at 98% utilization—unsustainably high levels that will inevitably lead to maintenance shutdowns or equipment failures. 2. Historical Decline of Refining Infrastructure Dr. Norris traces how Western nations, particularly OECD countries, have systematically closed older refineries while new mega-refineries have been built in the Middle East, Asia, and Africa. This "policy degradation" was driven by the belief that oil and gas were obsolete industries. Countries like Australia went from 8 refineries to 2, and New Zealand from 1 to zero—leaving them dangerously dependent on imports. 3. Geopolitical Disruptions Multiple conflicts are compounding the crisis: Ukraine-Russia War: Russia, once the world's largest diesel exporter, has had refineries destroyed by drone strikes and is now banned from exporting Iran Conflict: Iranian refining capacity sits beyond the Strait of Hormuz and has been targeted, blocking both crude and refined product exports Tanker Route Disruptions: Longer shipping routes around the Cape of Good Hope and through contested straits have made transportation exponentially more expensive (tanker rates jumped from $25,000/day to $1 million/day) 4. Financial & Policy Barriers to New Refinery Construction The hosts discuss how: Bank financing for oil and gas projects has been deliberately restricted through proposed capital requirements ESG pressures and climate narratives have discouraged investment in energy infrastructure Building a new U.S. refinery takes 10-15 years and costs $12-15 billion—politically and financially unfeasible The Defense Production Act could accelerate existing refinery expansions, but hasn't been deployed 5. Climate Policy Consequences A significant portion addresses how climate alarmism and net-zero policies have: Discouraged capital investment in energy infrastructure Created artificial scarcity by closing refineries prematurely Offshored emissions rather than reducing them Left Western nations vulnerable to energy blackmail Been based partly on debunked climate scenarios (RCP 8.5) 6. China's Strategic Positioning China is identified as a "swing player" with significant spare refining capacity (operating at 73% utilization). The discussion suggests China may be conducting a "dry run" for potential Taiwan invasion scenarios by testing how long it can operate with reduced oil imports using strategic reserves and refined product storage. 7. Energy Security & Geopolitical Fragmentation The hosts emphasize that the globalized energy system is fragmenting. Countries that relied on cheap imports now face vulnerability. Energy security is becoming a critical national security issue, particularly for: Europe (facing diesel shortages, with some French filling stations 14-15% out of stock) California (dependent on imports despite hosting major U.S. military bases) Canada (facing potential fuel shortages due to refinery closures) 8. Monetary Policy & Interest Rates Dr. Norris argues that raising interest rates during a supply-side energy crisis (rather than a demand-side inflation problem) is counterproductive—it makes building new refining capacity more expensive when that's exactly what's needed. 9. Canada-U.S. Energy Interdependence Discussion of how Canada and the U.S. are geographically interdependent for refined products, yet political tensions are threatening this critical relationship. The Greater Toronto Area would run out of fuel in three days without Alberta oil. The overarching theme is that short-term solutions don't exist—only long-term infrastructure investment can resolve the crisis, but political and financial barriers make that unlikely in the near term.
