The Energy Voices podcast is a mini-series produced by Student Energy in partnership with the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy (GCoM) helps youth unpack the energy system and explore today’s most pressing issues.
Episode 8: "10 years since the Paris Agreement, who actually kept their promises?"
We’re wrapping up the Energy Voices series with a critical look at the promises that shaped the last decade of climate action. Ten years after the Paris Agreement, our guests examine what progress has actually been made, where governments and industries have fallen short, and why global emissions continue to rise despite major climate commitments and clean energy growth. The conversation also explores what accountability looks like moving forward, whose voices have been sidelined in climate negotiations, and what young people want to see happen next.
Featuring:
⚡ Harjeet Singh - Strategic Advisor and Asia Lead, Fossil Fuel Treaty Initiative
⚡ Andy Deacon - Co-Managing Director, Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy
⚡ Brook M. Thompson - Water Resource Engineer & Indigenous Water Rights Activist
As we close this series, we thank you for joining us across eight episodes exploring the challenges, tradeoffs, and possibilities shaping the energy transition.

Episode 7: “What does a locally led energy system look like?”
This episode explores how communities are taking control of their energy systems, from a solar-powered cooperative farm in Canada, a student initiative in northern Uganda turning agricultural waste into cooking fuel after a charcoal ban, and Indigenous-led dam removal and river restoration in the Klamath River region. Our guests unpack how locally led energy solutions can create jobs, build resilience, and keep decision-making power within communities, while also navigating the real-world challenges of access, infrastructure, and implementation.

Episode 6: The demand side: "How can we use less energy while living better?”
Our guests explore the overlooked side of the energy transition. While most conversations focus on building more clean energy, they unpack how efficiency, conservation, and flexibility can reduce demand, cut emissions, and ease pressure on energy systems. They also examine why energy use continues to rise, what that means for resources and infrastructure, and how rethinking how we live, move, and design our systems can unlock a more sustainable path forward.
Featuring:
⚡ Stéphanie Bouckaert - Head of Demand Sectors Unit, International Energy Agency (IEA)
⚡ Brendan Haley - Senior Director of Policy Strategy, Efficiency Canada

Episode 5: Emerging Energy Solutions: Closing the gap from pilot to scale
This episode dives into emerging energy solutions and their potential to redefine the energy transition. Moving beyond the mainstream focus on solar and wind, we explore hurdles facing technologies like Green Hydrogen, CCUS, and nature-based solutions. We shift the conversation from "what exists" to "how it scales," examining the friction caused by rising energy competition from AI, the necessity of strategic resource allocation, and the need for localized infrastructure.

Episode 4: What sectors are actually hard to decarbonize, and why?
This episode dives into the so-called “hard-to-abate” sectors of the economy, from steel and cement to long-haul transport and aviation. Our guests explore why decarbonizing these industries is so complex, looking at the technical, economic, and policy limitations that make change challenging. They also discuss the innovative solutions and emerging technologies that could help transform these essential parts of our global infrastructure.
We are joined by guest host Helen Watts, Executive Director of Student Energy , for this conversation.
