About Engage in the Process: A National Fellowships Podcast
Engage in the Process shares the remarkable stories from University of South Carolina students who have earned nationally competitive fellowships. You’ll travel with them around the world, experience the opportunities gained through both failure and success, and hear the important questions that led each student to where they need to be. Our newest series, Fellowships on the Fly, focuses on fellowships lasting two weeks or fewer. National fellowships advisor Valerie Weingart speaks with three students who demonstrate that even a short fellowship opportunity can have a lasting impact.
Faculty mentors introduced Alexia Crockett to research, and an influential course on addictions sparked her curiosity further. These personal connections have encouraged her to continue in her research career, even amidst a pandemic. Now, she’s focusing on the brain’s reaction to stress and has earned the AAUW Dissertation Fellowship to support her PhD research.

First-Generation Fellowship Recipients: Nina Coli
Fellowships were on Nina's radar early in her USC journey, and she wasted no time pursuing opportunities that aligned with her passion for environmental science. A National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates took her to Rutgers University for the summer and connected her with a supportive research community and additional sources of funding.
The Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship made Daisy's study abroad dreams come true much sooner than expected. Daisy recounts her UK Maymester course, "The Foundations of Law and Government," and explains how the experience influenced her academic and career trajectory.
