Zdravení: Setkání dvou známých probíhá přibližně následujícím způsobem: Hugh: Hello. Emma: Hello. How nice to see you! Hugh: Nice to see you too. Emma: It’s been ages. How are you? Hugh: I’m very well actually, I’m very well. How about you? Staršího kolegu v práci pozdravíte zdvořilejším Good morning nebo Good afternoon. Ať už zdravíte formálně či neformálně, v obou případech k pozdravu patří dotaz na zdraví dotyčného: Hello. How are you? Hi! How’s it going? Na tuto zdvořilostní otázku si nepostěžujete na šéfa, ale většinou odpovíte: I’m very well, thank you. How are you? (Mám se výborně a co ty?) popřípadě: I’m fine thanks. Ve své odpovědi se na oplátku zeptáte, jak se vede dotyčnému. Nakonec můžete vyjádřit radost ze setkání: And you? It’s nice to see you! (To jsem rád, že tě vidím.) Emma a Hugh se náhodou potkávají ve foyer divadla: Hugh: Emma! Emma: Hugh? Hugh: Hello! Emma: Hello. How nice to see you! Hugh: Nice to see you too. Emma: It’s been ages. How are you? Hugh: I’m very well, actually. I’m very well. How about you? Emma: Yeah . Yeah … I’m fine. I’ve been quite busy. But you look great. How are the family? Hugh: Oh - they’re fine - they’re fine. Emma: And your mum? How’s she? Hugh: Yeah - she’s all right. No, we’re all fine. Emma: Oh good. Hugh: It’s so nice to see you. (Foyer Bell) Emma: Look - look that’s the bell. Look. We … shall I meet you for a drink? Hugh: I’ll see you [for] a drink afterwards. Emma: Yeah - yeah. OK Bye Hugh: Bye.

Když se s někým setkáte poprvé, nejspíš uslyšíte: Eva: Hi Nick. Have you met Sandra? Nick: No, I don’t think I have. Při prvním setkání obvykle někoho někomu představujeme: I’d like to introduce you to..., I’d like you to meet… Taky úplně stačí představit jednoho druhému jenom jménem: Caroline, this is David. David - Caroline. Hugh - učitel angličtiny - představuje svou novou kolegyni Emmu: Hugh: Oh Emma, here comes Gary. Gary, I’d like you to meet Emma. Emma, this is Gary. Emma: Pleased to meet you. Gary: Pleased to meet you. Hugh: Emma’s just joined us - she’s joining the English department. Emma: Yes. Gary: Oh that’s great. Hugh: And Gary’s deputy head of the history department. Emma: Oh really. Gary: Yes. Emma: Oh. I’m really happy to be here. Gary: Well, it’s good to have you on board! Emma: Thanks. Thanks.

Lekce 3: Personal Information

Slovo chat znáte z internetu, chit-chat znamená: nezávazné popovídání, pár oťukávacích vět, když se s někým dáváte do hovoru: Emma: It’s really hot in here, isn’t it? Hugh: It is, isn’t it? Far too hot … Are you enjoying the exhibition? Nezávazně se dá například pohovořit - about the weather … about the number of people travelling … about how busy the train is … toto všechno jsou neutrální - opatrná témata, nechcete se totiž dotknout člověka, o kterém nic nevíte: It’s awful weather, isn’t it? It’s hot in here, isn’t it? It’s busy today, isn’t it? Koncové ISN’T IT? (question tag: viďte? že ano?) přidáváte, protože stejně jako v češtině tím chcete vtáhnout druhou osobu do hovoru - říkáte si o potrvzení svých slov. It’s a lovely day, isn’t it? Yes, beautiful. Hovor začnete nějakým nezávazným neutrálním tématem. Člověka, který právě přistoupil do vlaku, se nezeptáte, jestli je ženatý nebo vdaná. I think questions like that are too personal. V Británii platí dvojnásob, že se neptáte na věci ze soukromého života. V multinárodní, multikulturní společnosti si nemůžete být jisti, čím se můžete neznámého člověka dotknout, a tak se radši při CHIT-CHAT neptáte na výši platu a vyhýbáte otázkám o politice či náboženství. Emma a Hugh do sebe doslova vrazili na výstavě: Emma Oh. Hugh Oh. I’m sorry. Emma No - my fault. Sorry. Hugh No, I’m sorry. Emma Oh. Hugh Anyway. Emma It’s really hot in here, isn’t it? Hugh It is, isn’t it? Far too hot. Emma (sigh) Hugh Are you enjoying the exhibition? Emma Yes. Hugh Good. Emma Well, it’s very quiet today, isn’t it … Hugh Yes Emma … which is great.
