[…] The famous author Guy de Maupassant even famously said he ate lunch at the Towers restaurant every day because it was the only place in Paris where you couldn't see the wretched thing. By 1925, it was 36 years old, rusting and not the sort of place American tourists would propose under as they do today. So when a newspaper article suggested it might one day be dismantled, this was not a completely absurd idea. Lustig's plan was built on that small foundation of plausibility. First, he paid a skilled forger to produce official government stationery for him, complete with the seal of the ministry responsible for the tower. […]
