A programmer spent New Year's Eve 1999 in a mobile home with a generator and a year of dehydrated food — and he understood the code better than anyone at your party. The real story of the Y2K bug, the fix nobody saw, and why "nothing happened" is the proof, not the punchline. Plus: past modals for near-misses, and how to hedge a number honestly.

Dystopian Hiking: Stephen King's The Long Walk
A hundred teenage boys start walking. Fall behind three times, and a soldier shoots you. The last one standing wins. That's the entire premise — and it somehow took Stephen King's very first novel almost fifty years, two abandoned directors, and one deceptively simple "how do you even film this?" problem to finally make it to screen.
The movie hit theaters last September, did fine, and then everyone moved on, the way you do. Except last month — nearly a full year later — it quietly became the most-watched thing on HBO Max, beating out movies that hadn't even had time to get boring yet.
In this episode: the strange, slow-motion journey of a film that refused to stay forgotten, plus the English toolkit for telling any story that builds gradually instead of all at once.
Fair warning: it's a dark premise. We keep it factual. Press play anyway.

Weird Words: The Bizarre Origin of "OK"
You've probably said this word today already, and you have no idea where it came from. Neither did anyone else, for over a hundred years. Biscuit brands, a forgotten Native American chief, a Haitian rum port — people threw out increasingly wild theories, and every single one was wrong.
The real story is dumber, and somehow better: two feuding newspaper editors, a deliberate misspelling, and a presidential campaign that accidentally rescued a dying joke. I get into how "OK" clawed its way from a throwaway 19th-century punchline to the most recognized word on Earth, plus what it can teach you about how one tiny word does five different jobs in English without you ever noticing.

New Coke: How a Billion Dollar Mistake Saved Coca-Cola
In 1985, Coca-Cola did something it hadn't done in ninety-nine years: it changed the formula. Two hundred thousand taste tests said the new version was better. The public disagreed — loudly, immediately, and in at least one case, with an actual lawsuit. This week I'm walking through the New Coke disaster: the blunder, the backlash, and the twist ending nobody at Coca-Cola saw coming.
Along the way, you'll pick up six new vocabulary words and two grammar structures — the past perfect and the third conditional — pulled straight out of the story instead of some textbook. Want the written version? There's a companion lesson at englishontopic.com, and Patreon supporters get a downloadable PDF to go with it.
Ninety-nine years of tradition, gone in one press conference. Come find out how a company got it so wrong, and so right, in the same summer.

The Odyssey: Masterpiece or Miscast?
What do you do when a movie is, by nearly every professional measure, a triumph — and a significant chunk of the audience decided they hated it before the trailer even finished? That's the strange position Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey found itself in this week. Critics are calling it career-best work. A section of viewers is furious about who got cast as Helen of Troy. I get into both sides of that split, walk through what Homer's actual three-thousand-year-old story is even about, and teach you the English you need to say "this is great, and also, I get the criticism" — without flattening either half into a lie.

EOT Episode 1: The History of Coffee
Coffee didn’t just wake up the world — it got banned by sultans, smuggled across borders, and built on colonial exploitation before it ever hit your morning cup. This episode unpacks the wild, contested history of coffee (yes, the dancing goats are real-ish) while teaching you how to tell a layered story in English using past tenses that actually sound native. C1/C2 level. Dry humor included.
