Deep Dive into Enough and Other Magic Words along with other books by David W. Jones in these enriching conversations between John and Jane Doe. David is the Pastor of Macland Presbyterian Church in Powder Springs, Georgia and author of twelve books and collections.
One reader described David, ”Very few storytellers are the storyteller that David Jones is. He spins a tale to make a point and, in doing so, reveals truth through laughter. The tale becomes the memory tool so that the ”ah-ha” moments become imprinted on your mind and can be retrieved for future inspiration.”
explores the concept of vision, contrasting it with mere sight. It uses Mary’s Magnificat from Luke 1 as an example of visionary faith, highlighting her prophetic understanding of God’s actions. Further examples illustrate the lack of vision in various contexts, such as the haphazard development of Boston’s roads and the shortsighted opposition to railroads. The text emphasizes the importance of vision for personal growth, societal progress, and shaping the future, contrasting it with a reliance on easy, short-term solutions. Ultimately, it promotes the cultivation of vision as crucial for individual and collective flourishing.

Leadership Lesson Two: Soul Leadership
Edwin Friedman’s Generation to Generation analyzes leadership styles, contrasting charismatic leadership (which, while effective initially, creates dependency and limits individual growth) with consensus-based leadership (which can stifle creativity and be susceptible to manipulation). The book argues for a systems approach, where leaders prioritize self-differentiation while maintaining connection with their followers, fostering both goal achievement and individual growth within the group. This approach shifts the dynamic from control to influence, encouraging followers to take responsibility and ultimately maximizing the overall health and effectiveness of the system. The text concludes by emphasizing the importance of ”soul leadership,” where leaders prioritize self-actualization to inspire similar growth in their followers.

Leadership Lesson Three: Nonanxious Leadership
This text from ”Congregational Leadership in Anxious Times” explores effective leadership during stressful situations. It contrasts two leadership styles: those who prioritize immediate peace (”peacemongers”) and those who embrace challenges. The core argument emphasizes the importance of self-regulation, enabling leaders to manage their own anxieties and thus positively influence their congregations. This involves recognizing resistance as normal, exercising patience, and focusing on one’s own behavior rather than attempting to directly control others’ reactions. Ultimately, the text advocates for a leadership approach rooted in self-awareness, resilience, and faith.
