Business Development Secrets for Agency Owners

Henry DeVries has spent the last 15 years ghostwriting, co-authoring, editing, and publishing more than 200 business books, and he still writes his own. He is the publisher at Indie Books International, the author of 20 marketing books, and a senior staff writer with the California Business Journal. His people are advertising and marketing agency owners, which is the world he came out of, so he knows their pain and he says he has cracked the code on how to solve it. Most of the conversation lands on one number. Eighty-five percent of Henry's business comes from referrals, and none of it came from hunting for a magic bullet online. He walks through the top of what he calls his magnificent seven, starting with small-scale seminars, how-to speeches, a TV show he hosts, and a weekly newsletter that 2,500 people have signed up for, and he makes a straight case that generosity is the strategy. Give the helpful information away. Charge for the specifics. Be interesting to less people, because a narrow niche makes you more interesting, not less. He also gets practical about the two things that stall most experts. A business book does not have to take three years if you build the plan first, and Henry runs through several of the nine ways he teaches, including talking a book into existence in an hour a week. And a business that depends on you is not finished yet. He spent a year with six different experts before bringing partners into the family business, and he now calls himself the chief book architect rather than the person who has to make the donuts.
