Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche builds this up in three passes:
1. The baby-food teaching. He compares teaching deity to feeding an infant. The "solid food" — the real deity — is just plain awareness. The mind that hears the sound, knows the heat, thinks any thought at all.
02:05 But hand that raw truth to a beginner and it chokes them. So a skilled teacher purées it into friendly forms first: gentle Padmapani holding a lotus, then four-armed Avalokiteshvara, then a thousand arms.
04:52 As you mature, the forms get more shocking — wrathful, fanged Hayagriva, then Hayagriva in union with a consort — each one weaning you off your comfort.
07:41 Eventually he admits the forms were never the real thing. They dissolve into syllables, then a single letter, then nothing — "nothing, but everything altogether," which has always been you.
2. The glass of water. Same water is drinkable on a tray, dubious in a sink, repellent in a toilet, and home to a fish. One thing appears as everything depending on who perceives it.
