El español es una de las pocas lenguas del mundo (menos del 14 %) que distingue dos consonantes róticas, concretamente /ɾ/ y /r/, es decir, la r suave y la r fuerte o, en términos lingüísticos, percusiva y vibrante (vibrante simple y vibrante múltiple en terminología más antigua pero aún bastante extendida).<br /><br />Veamos ejemplos de pares mínimos de consonantes róticas, en los que tenemos una pareja de palabras iguales excepto por la diferencia r‑rr.
