Episode highlights: I’ve gotten side-tracked, so let’s do a deep dive into obituaries, y’all! The purpose, history, and a handful of the wildest obituaries I could find. All links to the obits will be posted in the show notes on the website, www.awkwardancestry.com (http://www.awkwardancestry.com)
(Lawrence Pfaff Sr., Kathleen Dehmlow , Florence Harrelson , Linda Stull , Dolores Aguilar, and Karen Short )
We’ll return to my story next week and how an obituary changed my life.

7. I Did It My Way
Episode highlights: This episode covers my last two years at Harding and the summer before I moved out to Moore Hall at UNCC. I apologize to my German exchange student and I explain why my family wouldn’t allow me to go. Lots of other stories about my relatives where I try to walk the line between telling a fair and accurate account of people and events, my feelings about them, and finding redeeming qualities about people who have never been able to do the same for me. What else? I finished reading Nowhere Girl - definitely worth reading! And a bit of “internet therapy”.
If you would like to share your story, email me at awkwardancestry@proton.me or find the submission form on awkwardancestry.com

6. Fend For Yourself
Episode highlights: *mentions of suicide, self-harm, dieting, eating disorders* My bumpy transition into high school at Harding, but marching band made it better, but maybe also worse? My grade after the first quarter in geometry brought things to a head with Granny. I started dating, actually dating after breaking up with my 8th grade boyfriend over the summer, but that relationship isn’t healthy. Along with, and perhaps because of that, I develop unhealthy eating habits that would probably be called an eating disorder. My mother and Les try again and even though it doesn’t work out, again, Les and I spent time together going to movies or having dinner at Wendy’s. I got called into the guidance counselor’s office which actually made things worse at home. To get out of the house, I started my first job as a cashier.
Finally, I shout out the books I’m reading and dish out this week’s dose of internet therapy. I just finished reading Obitchuary - The Big Hot Book of Death (they also have a podcast!) and I’m just about finished with The Stranger in my Genes by Bill Griffeth.

5. The Family Tree Project
Episode highlights: This episode brought to you by the handful of jelly beans I ate before I hit record… The end of my elementary years, the transition to middle school, my year at Northwest and how two torn pages in a science book led to me changing schools. The time I got grounded for dropping the F-bomb, how I was terrified of telling Granny I was bleeding, my mother gets divorced and eventually moves into our neighborhood. The time Granny sent me, at age 11 or 12, to be a child chaperone for my mother and her questionable choice of a boyfriend. The day Granny and I stole a dog and how I hoped my mother would finally take me back.
I talk some about how this introspection and examining events from the past and comparing my childhood experiences contributes to how I spend time with my own children.
Finally, I shout out the books I’m reading and dish out this week’s dose of internet therapy from narcissistic_hangover, which I have a lot of thoughts about.

4. We are made up of what we have remembered
Episode highlights: A menagerie of stories and recollections from my elementary years no one ever asked for but that shaped who I am today. The cemetery cats, my cousins, my experience of Granny, and I admit how little attention I paid to everything as a kid but am piecing together as an adult. I just finished the book Unearthing by Kyo Maclear and I share some of the more profound sections about the burden of secrets and the trauma of a child being taken from their parents.
On the website I have shared some bonus content - photos and stories that didn’t make the edit for this episode. Was that my father at the door that day? Did the found “stray” cat belong to one of my classmates?

Daniel Lynn Freeman
In this episode I share a couple random childhood memories, what life was like when I moved out at 18 - the dorm, apartment, roommates, boyfriends, and where I worked... the landscape of things leading up to the events and discoveries in 1999. I begin to tell the story of how I found the man I thought to be my father- Daniel Lynn Freeman's obituary. Even though I'd never met him, his name was on my birth certificate and he was part of family lore.
