Trianon 100

100 éves a Trianoni békeszerződés, mely Magyarországon mind a mai napig nemzeti traumaként él tovább.

The Trianon peace treaty closing the first world war for Hungary, and diminishing its territory by 2/3 has happened a 100 years ago, but it is still considered a lively trauma for many Hungarians. In the first part of my podcast I interview László Miklósi, the president of the Association of teachers of History in Hungary about the historical background of the Trianon treaty. I ask him about how we should teach this historical event in the schools, and how we should handle this issue in general.

In the second part of my podcast, you will hear an interview with Margaret McMillan, a Canadian professor of history, whom I asked about the historical circumstances of the Trianon peace treaty, whether the Hungarian leadership at that time could have done anything differently to reduce the losses. Interview about the case of news portal Index.hu and the Hungarian Media

Interview made with Ágnes Urbán media economist at Mérték Média Monitor on 08/07/2020 related to the recent attacks against the last main independent news portal index.hu and about the Hungarian Media landscape.

Hungary has been rated a hybrid regime in May 2020 by Freedom House, the first time an EU member state has reached this status. After the Sargentini report in the fall of 2018 that was approved by a qualified majority in the European Parliament, this latter has initiated the Article 7 procedure against Hungary due to serious breaches of the rule of law. Nevertheless this process has been stalled due to the requirement of unanimity in the European Council's decision-making process.

The new Media Law was introduced by the constitutional majority of Fidesz, the ruling party in 2011 after Viktor Orbán won the elections in 2010. It has received strong international and local criticism due to its biased regulations favoring the ruling party, but this critics had no considerable effect. Now we reached the point where over 90% of Media is controlled by the ruling party. The case of Index is the latest development in this process.

The EU-subventions arriving to the Hungarian government has been playing an ambiguous role, as they are spent in a biased way favoring government close oligarchs and business circles, thus indirectly helping the take-over of the media companies and the further elimination of media diversity in Hungary.
