   Still Looking: I Don't Know How to Explain You

   This one is personal in a different way. Twelve episodes in, a recruiter at a company you’d recognize said something I’ve heard, in one form or another, my whole career: “I don’t know how to explain you.” It wasn’t really a compliment. It was a diagnosis — of a system that’s very good at reading specialists, and not very good at reading anyone else. This episode is about that gap. About a blue gummy bear on a Tokyo sidewalk, and why I went back to look at it. About the voices that shape who we become, especially when the people physically closest to us aren’t shaping us in the direction we want to grow. And about why the things that are hardest to explain about you are often the things that built the most capability.    The Current: EveryCity in Action

   This one is different. Most episodes of EveryCity Whispers are about a place — the pressure it creates, the instincts it builds, the quiet rules it rewards. This episode is about what happens when those lessons get tested in real life. For the past three years, I’ve been navigating a workplace situation that was genuinely unfair — documented, validated by the company’s own investigation, and then quietly left unresolved. A slow pressure campaign built around one assumption: that eventually, I’d become uncomfortable enough to leave. I didn’t. Not because I’m unusually tough. But because the cities from Season 1 had already been training something into me: reflexes, instincts, ways of reading pressure before it reads you. Tokyo. São Paulo. Boston. Virginia. Chicago. This episode is the clearest proof yet of what this show is really about. The situation isn’t fully resolved. But I am. Also, I'm gathering ideas for future episodes. I learned that through family stories—my 86-year-old grandmother stranded on freight tracks who treated panic like a rookie mistake, and a dad who explained the city like a solvable system: eight blocks to a mile, numbers you can trust, and a grid that tells you exactly where you are. But this episode is about what the grid can’t tell you: the other lines—rails, codes, favors, silence—and what happens when you try to “claim” a place you’ve only ever visited. I’ve come to learn that Tokyo never tells you what to do—but you’ll still feel the pressure to do it. It rewards quiet mastery, unspoken rules, and social harmony—but the cost is often your own rhythm, your own voice. If you’re not paying attention, you’ll start disappearing without realizing it.
