Still Looking: I Don't Know How to Explain You

This one is personal in a different way.

Twelve episodes in, a recruiter at a company you’d recognize said something I’ve heard, in one form or another, my whole career: “I don’t know how to explain you.”

It wasn’t really a compliment. It was a diagnosis — of a system that’s very good at reading specialists, and not very good at reading anyone else.

This episode is about that gap. About a blue gummy bear on a Tokyo sidewalk, and why I went back to look at it. About the voices that shape who we become, especially when the people physically closest to us aren’t shaping us in the direction we want to grow. And about why the things that are hardest to explain about you are often the things that built the most capability.

It’s also the most direct I’ve ever been about why I made this show, and who I made it for.

This is the last bridge episode before Season 2.

The cities aren’t the point.

The seeing is.

Show notes, track list, transcript and more: https://everycitywhispers.com/looking

The Current: EveryCity in Action

This one is different.

Most episodes of EveryCity Whispers are about a place — the pressure it creates, the instincts it builds, the quiet rules it rewards. This episode is about what happens when those lessons get tested in real life.

For the past three years, I’ve been navigating a workplace situation that was genuinely unfair — documented, validated by the company’s own investigation, and then quietly left unresolved. A slow pressure campaign built around one assumption: that eventually, I’d become uncomfortable enough to leave.

I didn’t.

Not because I’m unusually tough. But because the cities from Season 1 had already been training something into me: reflexes, instincts, ways of reading pressure before it reads you.

Tokyo. São Paulo. Boston. Virginia. Chicago.

This episode is the clearest proof yet of what this show is really about.

The situation isn’t fully resolved.

But I am.

Also, I'm gathering ideas for future episodes. Please reach out to me if you have any insights to share about your city. Steven@everycitywhispers dot com.

What Ten Cities Handed Me

After ten episodes, ten cities, and one full season of noticing the invisible pressure places put on us, I needed to step back and take stock.

Not a recap. An inventory.

Because something shifted recently. And when it did, I realized I hadn't just been making a podcast.

This is the episode before that story. A quiet accounting of what ten cities trained into me — one at a time, without asking permission, without explaining why.

Pressure testing my sense of freedom from Tokyo. Resilience from São Paulo. Directness from Amsterdam. Grace under pressure from Dubai. The ability to float from San Diego, and to revise from North Carolina. Courage from New York. How to read the real rule from Boston. Audacity from Chicago. And from Virginia — the place I barely thought about for years — the skill I may have used more than any other.

You don't always know what a city left in you until you need it.

Next episode, I will.
