David Popa
For a decade now, the artist David Popa (https://www.davidpopaart.com/about) has been trekking to remote (and sometimes dangerous) places to create massive ephemeral frescoes on land and ice. As a filmmaker, he captures these creative journeys so that others can feel the haunted and hopeful spirit expressed in these works of art. He has collaborated with brands like Adidas, transformed a UNESCO World Heritage site in Saudi Arabia into a canvas, and been featured in programs on Apple TV. But before all of that, he was the son of a legendary graffiti writer in New York City, and he had to find his own way beyond the passions of his father and the constraints of conventional art.

Honestly, the most common version of a co-write is you have a good conversation and then you get a loot bag at the end of the conversation, which is a song version of the conversation. That's what I'm doing when I'm writing with an artist. I don't want to tell them what to say, and I don't want to tell them how to say it. I just want to listen well enough that in listening, I can help them shape what they are saying about a situation into something they can sing about a situation. And in the best sessions, my favorite sessions, usually what they are saying and what ends up in the song are very similar. […]
