Your Auditor Will Ask About AI in Finance. Here’s What CFOs Need Ready.
Your AI tools got the number right. Can you show how? If your auditor asked who checked the AI's answer, who would raise their hand? Do you have a record of what you asked the AI to do?HIGHLIGHTS OF EPISODEMost finance teams now use AI tools to help produce their numbers, and most of the time the tools get it right. Then the auditor shows up. Most teams can't answer, because nobody kept a record of what the AI was asked or who checked the answer before it went into the report. Mike walks CFOs and finance pros through the three things an auditor will ask and what to have ready for each, so you can keep using AI and still enjoy a boring audit. This episode's sponsor is Finance AI Lab. AI Tools Saved Your FP&A Team Hours. So Why Is Everyone Still Here at 8pm?
AI saved you two hours this week. Where did they go?If your AI tools are working, why are you still at your desk at 8pm?What would your FP&A team do with an hour nobody else gets to claim?HIGHLIGHTS OF EPISODEAI tools save finance pros real time every week, and the research backs it up. The catch comes after. About a third of those saved hours get refilled with more work, so the time never makes it home. Mike uses AI so his team spends the day on the thinking and still leaves on time, and he wants every CFO and FP&A lead listening to decide what a saved hour is for before somebody else decides it for them. This episode's sponsor is Finance AI Lab. Are AI Tools Worth It for FP&A? Most CFOs Can't Prove It
Can you prove what your AI tools paid back this year? Who asked for the last AI project your team built? Why has the same payback problem shown up in surveys since 2007? HIGHLIGHTS OF EPISODEAre AI tools worth it for FP&A? Mike asks the question most companies skip. He tells the story of a client team that built six AI projects a week, and when he checked, almost all of them paid back nothing and nobody had asked for them. The problem is older than ChatGPT. The people who build these tools have reported it in a survey since 2007. CFOs and finance pros already know the fix: write down the starting number, then come back and check. Are Humans Optional in AI in Finance? The 3 Gates Every Finance Team Needs
Ever opened a deck your AI Tools built and found the numbers went wrong three steps back? Watching every AI pilot on your FP&A team stall out before anything ships? Tired of being the only person in the room asking who actually checked this? Mike came back from his yearly AI conference with a pattern he did not expect, because talk after talk was about AI not working, and the reason kept tracing back to the same thing: nobody checking the information going in. He fixes it the way companies approve big spending, with named people at set points who can each stop the whole thing. He calls them gates. Every AI process needs three. Built for finance pros and any FP&A team putting AI Tools into real work. He goes to that same conference every year. This episode's sponsor is Finance AI Lab. Windows Broke Claude Overnight. The AI Tools Backup Plan Every FP&A Pro Needs
What happens to your workflow when an update you never asked for installs itself overnight? Should one AI tool ever be allowed to run your entire day in finance? What's your backup plan if Claude, Microsoft Copilot, or any AI tool goes down tomorrow? A routine Windows update broke the daily workflow Mike runs his finance work through, and he spent the whole morning rebuilding what one overnight glitch had wiped out completely. Work stopped cold. Offices already have a rule that no critical job rests on one person; Mike had let Claude become that person without meaning to. He still uses Claude every day. He just wants FP&A teams to build a backup before their own version of this morning finds them. Windows never did ask permission first. This episode's sponsor is Finance AI Lab. AI Tools Are Automating Excel. You Have to Be Technical with AI in Finance to Survive.
AI Tools Are Automating Excel. You Have to Be Technical with AI in Finance to Survive. What breaks if you took two weeks off right now?How many times has someone come to you before making a decision, instead of just running the numbers themselves? Can you explain what AI actually did for you to someone who'd push back on it? Excel was the bottleneck for twenty-five years, and standing in it was the whole job. AI tools now do what used to earn a promotion, which means the exports, the cleanup, the deck nobody wanted to rebuild every month, the part FP&A got rewarded for owning, is finished, and what's left is a choice between going technical, staying close to the business, or using AI to cover the technical so you can do both. AI in Finance Gave You Garbage. You’d Never Brief a New Analyst That Way.
Tried AI on real finance work and got back something you would never send? Can you point at an example of good, or can you only describe one? Ever written off a tool on the strength of one bad Tuesday? HIGHLIGHTS OF EPISODE The first time I opened Microsoft Copilot for Excel I gave it three months of revenue data and one sentence, asking why a line wasn’t working, and when it handed back something unformatted and generic I decided the tool was junk and didn’t open it again for two months. I was the problem. A new analyst gets weeks of context before anyone judges the work, and I gave the model a sentence. This episode is the three things missing from that handoff: context, standards, and the job you picked. Adding context took my output up about 80%. Attaching one report my leadership had liked took it to 95%. If you work in FP&A and AI has burned you once, this is the fix, and it takes about 10 minutes. Your AI Finance Project Looks Impressive. Repeat It Next Month, Watch It Fail.
What if the AI win you keep bragging about isn’t actually finished? Why can a 30% drop in your exception count mean nothing got fixed at all? What happens when your AI report quietly stops working, and your CFO finds out before you do? Highlights of Episode Eighty percent took minutes. The rest took weeks. I’m sharing how I built an AI-assisted reconciliation that looked finished in eleven minutes, then broke the moment I tried to run it again, and what it actually took to make that automation hold up under a CFO’s scrutiny. If you’re an FP&A team already bragging about your AI win, this is the test to run before you promise anyone a repeat performance. 79% of Finance Teams Blew Their AI Budget. Here's What They Missed.
79% of companies went over their AI budget last year, and the ones who called themselves most mature at cost control did worse. AI spend stopped being an engineering experiment and became a line on your budget, and in most buildings nobody owns it. In this episode I break down why the number from your pilot was never going to survive production, the mechanical reason AI cost grows like a triangle instead of a line, and the 3 levers that bring it back down. All 3 are levers you already know how to pull. In this episode - Why 98% of FinOps teams now manage AI spend, up from 31% in 2024 - The ownership gap that leaves AI cost unowned: Technology says 55%, Finance says 53% - The triangle problem: why a 10-turn AI job costs 55 units of context, not 10 - Why 40 to 60% of what an AI feature costs never appears on the vendor invoice - 3 levers that move the number: caching at 90% off, model routing, and the 50% batch discount - The 3 questions to ask this week, none of which require you to be technical Resources mentioned - FinOps Foundation, State of FinOps 2026 and the Token Economics guidance - Deloitte CFO Signals Q2 2026 (200 CFOs at $1B+ companies) - DoiT and Sapio Research AI spending survey (500 finance leaders) - Flexera 2026 State of ITAM (512 IT asset managers) - Datadog State of AI Engineering 2026 - Anthropic prompt caching and batch pricing documentation About the host Mike Dion runs F9 Finance and is a senior finance leader working in the trenches. I Stopped Writing Prompts. Now I Brief AI Agents to Run My Finance Work.
Last month I watched an AI agent take a job I would have broken into 15 separate prompts and just run it, start to finish, while I got a coffee. This episode hands you the skill that replaced prompt engineering for finance work, and it turns out to be one every decent finance manager already has. 3 shifts, 3 questions, and a month-end reconciliation that went from a full afternoon to 10 minutes. The story behind this episode A Lab member with a couple hundred saved prompts, still losing her afternoon to month-end. In this episode Swap the perfect prompt for a plain brief a new hire could follow. Hand an agent the whole job instead of feeding it 1 step at a time. Audit the trail when an agent hands you the end of 12 steps you never watched. Watch a reconciliation drop from a full afternoon to about 10 minutes. Run 3 questions before you hand any finance job to an agent. The takeaway "The finance pros who learn to direct the work don't just get their nights back. They become the ones their company can't afford to lose." I've Watched AI Make Finance Teams Busier for a Year. Here's What Finally Paid Off.
The same AI tool, in the same week, saved me a whole afternoon on one job and cost me one on another. This episode draws the line between the AI that pays you back in finance and the AI that just makes more work with a nicer font, grounded in fresh 2025 and 2026 data and a rule I call the verification tax. The story behind this episode Two finance jobs, same week, same AI tool, opposite results. In this episode Name "workslop" and spot it before you pass it downstream. See why 40% of workers got handed broken AI work in a single month. Learn why 95% of enterprise AI pilots returned nothing measurable. Split your recurring finance work into checkable work and judgment work. Ask 3 questions before you point AI at any task. Claude Fable 5 Launched, Vanished, and Came Back Faster Than A Close
On June 9th, Anthropic shipped the most powerful AI model the public had ever been allowed to touch. The most powerful AI model on the planet launched, got pulled by the US government 3 days later, and came back 3 weeks after that. In this episode I break down what the Claude Fable 5 saga means for any finance pro building AI into real work, and the 3 moves that keep a vanished tool from blowing up your deadline. In this episode Walk through the full Fable 5 timeline: launch, government pull, and return in about 3 weeks. See why frontier AI is a different dependency than Excel or your ERP. Reframe model risk as concentration risk, the kind finance already manages. Get 3 moves to protect deadline work when a model can vanish overnight. Why AI Rollouts In Finance Keep Stalling
Every vendor in finance is selling AI right now, and most of the pilots are quietly stalling. In this episode I break down the three failure modes I keep seeing across real finance functions, why each one happens, and the exact set of questions I'd ask before any AI tool ever rolls into your function again. If you've watched an AI pilot go quiet in the last year, or you're staring down a vendor deck right now, this one is for you. In This Episode Why "tool first, not job first" kills most AI rollouts before month 3 The specific question that separates pilots that ship from pilots that stall Why the CFO mandate is necessary but not sufficient (and who actually needs to own the build) The AI-ready data myth vendors are selling, and what's really the bottleneck The 3 questions to ask before any AI tool gets bought in your finance org The Takeaway "The finance pros who learn to ask these three questions become the people their function relies on when AI is on the table. They become the ones their company can't afford to lose."
