What is your note-taking mantra?

Goal setting is an important aspect of productivity. However, as your life becomes more and more complex, you'll also need systems and tools to help you organize the many pieces of information that you acquire from different sources. You'll need to figure out how to utilize those different threads of knowledge and resources in achieving your goals.

One such system is the PARA system, conceptualized by someone named Tiago Forte. Broadly, he says that our life goals and knowledge can be categorized into:

Projects - these are goals with due dates and deadlines

Areas - these are broad areas of our life, such as physical fitness

Resources - the different pieces of knowledge that we acquire in the form of articles, videos, or links

and finally, Archive - A backup of all the information that you can pull up if and when needed

A solid note-taking system and tool can help immensely with organizing the various resources that we require. I use OneNote to organize information related to my work. I also use Evernote to organize information related to my personal projects. You can organize these resources as a set of pages within notebooks. You can even assign tags to them so that you can easily pull up the the information that you need.

However, beyond a point, you are limited to notebooks, and maybe sections, pages, and tags. These help with the Resources and Archive parts. But what about the Projects and Areas part? You can manage projects and areas in OneNote or Evernote, but they're not really designed for that.

Think about managing a set of clients. You'd want a CRM system, not just a bunch of notes for each client.

Think about tracking your workouts. You'd want a spreadsheet of sorts in which you can tick off tasks and get a count of how many tasks remain.

Essentially, you want a combination of a notetaking tool, a wiki where you can have links between pages that dynamically adjust as you move pages around, and a database or set of tables that you can filter to quickly get to the most important information.

And that's exactly what Notion is.

To help you consider whether Notion is for you, you might check out a few templates that others have created and shared. These templates are designed to do specific things, so if your goal is to do one or more of those things, then you can pick up and directly use those templates.

Or you might build your own templates, customized to your own goals and workflow. I've linked a few templates in the description. Check them out.

What is your system for goal-setting and knowledge management? How do you make it work for you?

What place do you see for a notetaking system such as OneNote or Evernote or a complete life and knowledge management system such as Notion?

I'd be interested to know.

TEMPLATES:

Weekly Review [https://www.notion.so/Weekly-review-b102a5077c6c4e06abfcaecab231acd9]

Life Dashboard [https://www.notion.so/Life-Dashboard-add33dcae34c4a07890704aaab6c4388]

The Year Manifesto Year manifesto [https://www.notion.so/Year-manifesto-db79f06c764e451e80cb7ec3e477d1eb]

Habit Tracker Habit Tracker [https://www.notion.so/Habit-Tracker-fb80ddcfee0040d8900ff0d2a69402b0]

Workout Tracker [https://www.notion.so/Workouts-1c6875af1ec04f6d8ec64a0d520f67ed]

Maintenance List [https://www.notion.so/Maintenance-List-514f1fc646f04c03a80c1bfd441777d1]

Reading List 2021 [https://www.notion.so/2021-Reading-List-1abd0f9ebb5a432989a46c933d1c5bd6]

Work Portfolio [https://www.notion.so/Work-portfolio-263c32af6a4b4a0e83fbcf636d44dd27]

Personal Finance [https://www.notion.so/Personal-finances-32df76a3a6904c6f9e588f34d97e5a11]

Project Schedule [https://www.notion.so/Personal-finances-32df76a3a6904c6f9e588f34d97e5a11]
