But, these machines do not come cheap. Major military powers are now diverting the bulk of their defence budget to military modernisation. This puts India in quite a pickle. India’s One Rank One Pension move has increased salary and pension allocation to 50% of India’s defence budget. India’s political and military leadership understood this and decided to restore the balance with Agniveer, a short service scheme to induct soldiers to three branches of the military. But, the recent Loksabha elections of 2024 put a huge question mark on Agniveer. What is Agniveer? Why does India need Agniveer? Is it a mistake? What’s the way forward?
