Podcast Overview

A podcast of us sisters navigating our exploration of the 21st century - hosted by Arielle and Arie[lene]. Growing up, we've always been close. Now that we are in our late twenties/early thirties, life can take over and sometimes get ahead of us. We decided to create a podcast to not only document our own memories of our sisterhood, but also have a platform to connect with others who are similar or completely different. Being Asian American in the 21st century, we have both come to realize the importance of exploring our culture, as well as exploring all things non-Asian too.

S1E3: Cultural Appropriation vs Appreciation (pt. 1)

Happy July! In today's episode, we explore our interpretation of Cultural Appropriation and Cultural Appreciation.  Google's Definitions: Cultural Appropriation - the unacknowledged or inappropriate adoption of the customs, practices, ideas, etc. of one people or society by members of another and typically more dominant people or society. | Cultural Appreciation - appreciating another culture in an effort to broaden their perspective and connect with others cross-culturally, while cultural appropriation is taking one aspect of a culture that is not their own, such as culturally distinct items, aesthetics, or spiritual practices, and mimics it — without consent, permission, or any cultural context or relationship to that item or practice — solely for personal interest, make money, gain popularity, or because they like the way it looks. So... how do we know when to apply which and to what situation? It's all so confusing sometimes, and with today's cancel culture - it's hard to know when to take a stand and when to back off.    .............................
