Have You Seen: The Blair Witch Project (1999)
In "Have You Seen?" we discuss a movie that some of us know well and others have just now seen for the first time. This episode is also part of our annual Halloween season in which we revisit classic horror movies to see how they hold up for audiences who see them for the first time.
This week we revisit The Blair Witch Project, a 1999 found footage horror movie directed by Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez, and starring Heather Donohue, Michael Williams and Joshua Leonard, about a group of film students who hike into the Appalachian mountains to shoot a documentary about the local myth of the Blair witch.
We discuss the circumstances around the making of this movie and how the found footage conceit shaped every aspect of the movie's production, how the movie introduced general audiences to the found footage genre and how it compares to other entries in the genre that came after it and what Blair Witch does differently than most found footage movies, how the movie creates a divisive reaction in audiences who are either bored by nothing happening or engrossed by the tension the movie builds and why the movie still works so well despite breaking all the normal rules of storytelling, and much more.

Spoiler Review: Verity
This week we review and discuss Verity, a psychological drama movie directed by Michael Showalter and starring Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett, about a struggling author who is hired as a ghostwriter to complete the book series of a famous author who following an accident is no longer able to write, only to uncover sinister secrets surrounding that author's life.
We discuss the movie's central mystery surrounding Verity and whether we thought it made sense and can carry the movie, the numerous story problems dragging the movie down including lack of foreshadowing of important reveals and a tendency to tell rather than show when it comes to important aspects of the story as well as key character motivations, the movie's theme of needing to be liked and accepted, and much more.
