EYE ON THE EAST VILLAGE with host EV GRIEVE

About EYE ON THE EAST VILLAGE with host EV GRIEVE

EYE ON THE EAST VILLAGE features conversations with voices of New York’s original creative underground. Host and blogger/mystery gonzo journalist EV GRIEVE has been chronicling the real estate, residents and restaurants of the East Village and the Lower East Side for nearly 20 years on his wildly popular ad-free blog evgrieve.com (https://evgrieve.com/) On EYE ON THE EAST VILLAGE, he interviews longtime downtown characters and legends who maintain the legacy of Manhattan’s last remaining cultural underground community. Although the neighborhood continues to change rapidly, his insider guests showcase the voices behind the past, present and future of the lives and times of this still unique part of the city. For more information visit www.evgrieve.com (https://evgrieve.com/) This podcast is not affiliated with EAST VILLAGE EYE, the monthly magazine of popular and avant-garde culture that existed in print from May 1979 to January of 1987. EYE ON THE EAST VILLAGE Episode 13 Painter/Sculptor/Designer and Global Art Superstar SCOOTER LAFORGE

For EYE ON THE EAST VILLAGE Episode 13, Co-Hosts Alex Carpenter & Maegan Hayward of the East Village Vintage Collective (https://eastvillagevintagecollective.com/) sit down with East Village-based painter, sculptor and art/design star SCOOTER LAFORGE (https://www.instagram.com/scooterlaforge). Living and working in the neighborhood for over twenty years, LaForge's work is "inspired by the old masters, cute fluffy animals, and sometimes iconic cartoons," drawing from a number of pop culture and artistic references, ranging from Disney and Popeye to Keith Haring and Rembrandt, among others. He is internationally regarded for his now-famous wearable designs, and has a line of clothing for Patricia Field. Recorded live at Hi-Note on Avenue B, the conversation goes deep into Scooter's upbringing in New Mexico, how and why he landed in the East Village, his creative process in the studio, collaborating with a rich assortment of super talented artists, and much more - plus a lot of laughs! In addition to his solo show at HOWL! Happening Gallery in New York, he was the subject of a 2024 mid-career retrospective at Leslie Art + Design in Boston, and his work is in the collections of many prestigious collections around the world, including the Friedrichshof in Vienna and Sweden's Spritmuseum’s Absolut Art Colleection among others. Scooter has recently collaborated with Belgian designer Walter Van Beirendonck and Norwegian artist Bjarne Melgaard, and he was chosen to be a keynote speaker at Montreal’s Fashion & Design Festival. He was commissioned to create garments for Madonna’s performance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon as well as the Bitch I’m Madonna video off the Rebel Heart album. Beyoncé, Miley Cyrus, Rihanna and Debbie Harry have all worn items from his wildly successful clothing line and he has collaborated directly with Debbie Harry on garments created just for her personal and stage use. He was also commissioned to design a concert T-shirt for Blondie’s last tour. And among many awards, he is a recent recipient of a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant. The New York Times has described his work as "recalling the Neo-Expressionism that was popular in the '80s, the manic Neo-Surrealism of George Condo, and the comics-to-graffiti-to-canvas style of Kenny Scharf." Pop culture journalist and NYC nightlife legend Michael Musto has called him "my favorite living artist." Find out how to watch and learn more about Ethan Minsker's documentary "Scooter LaForge: A Life Of Art," at www.ethanminsker.com (https://www.ethanminsker.com/) (and support East Village artists!) You can also learn more about the making of the film in Eye On The East Village Episode 11 (https://jasoncharles.net/podcast/eye-on-the-east-village/3322/) featuring Alex and Maegan's in-depth conversation with filmmaker/artist/bon vivant ETHAN MINSKER. (https://www.ethanminsker.com/) Scooter and NYC writer and artist JASON HAAF (https://www.instagram.com/haafwit/) created the June 2025 Pride mural "Resist and Persist: A Lover's Story," located off the 2nd Avenue F Stop in Manhattan. Their recent collaboration, the book "Wasteland," (https://www.jasonhaaf.com/) will be out soon. EYE ON THE EAST VILLAGE Episode 9 features special guest JOHN HOLMSTROM, OG East Village resident artist, designer and creator of PUNK Magazine.  While EV Grieve remains behind-the-scenes, Alex Carpenter & Maegan Hayward of the East Village Vintage Collective (https://eastvillagevintagecollective.com/) are back to guest co-host for an in-depth and hilarious conversation with the iconic magazine's founder and publisher. John tells amazing stories about his early years in the city, creating PUNK and becoming an integral part of the CBGB's scene, his many adventures collaborating with downtown's greatest artists and musicians over the years, being a cartoonist at heart and much, much more. John Holmstrom created PUNK Magazine (http://punkmagazine.com/) in 1975, which launched the CBGB/punk rock movement and was instrumental in the success of many bands such as Blondie, the Ramones, and the Dead Boys. He has drawn and designed many posters, t-shirt designs, record, book and CD covers for The Ramones, The Dandy Warhols, the Rolling Stones, 50 Kaitenz and Murphy’s Law, magazines such as Bananas, High Times, Heavy Metal, and Video Games and has collaborated on films such as DOA: A Right of Passage and CBGB. His archives are housed in Yale University's Beinecke Library (https://archives.yale.edu/repositories/11/resources/920) and his work is on display at the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, and in the permanent archives of the Museum of Modern Art.
