President Donald Trump is holding a campaign rally in the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma. Thursday's visit puts Trump in the company of just a handful of U.S. presidents who have visited Native American tribes while in office. Tribal delegations have been meeting with presidents in Washington since the Early Republic. But presidential visits to tribal lands have been few and far between. The purpose and tone of those visits have changed dramatically as the relationship between the U.S. and tribal nations evolved. Early visits promoted the assimilation of Natives into white society, while more recent visits promoted the tribes' inherent right to govern themselves.

Police in Mississippi have arrested a second man in the death of a Black woman found hanging from a tree and have issued an arrest warrant for a third suspect. Jackson police said in a statement late Tuesday that they arrested 25-year-old Earnest Lloyd Jr. in the death of 29-year-old Tasia Fortune, whose body was found hanging behind an abandoned home in the city on Aug. 3. Like Fortune and the first man arrested, 51-year-old Jarques Ratliff, Lloyd is Black. Ratliff was arrested this month on murder charges and pleaded not guilty. Customs and Border Protection has doubled the pace of construction along the U.S.-Mexico border. In the Big Bend region, landowners, environmental groups, and ranchers oppose the construction, arguing the area isn't a high-traffic zone for illegal immigration.
