Why do pastors shrink from a "political approach?" They are asked by campaigns to endorse their candidate, to stand with their candidate, some are even paid to do those things. Pastors have a higher calling - that calling is to God above and no party nor candidate warrants that type of honor.
These are the biggest reasons pastors recoil when asked to be overtly political:
a. They've been lied to intentionally by those who seek to keep the church from being influential;
b. They've been burned before by political people who have taken advantage of the pastors in their area or state;
c. They don't know American history enough to know and grasp the traditional role of the pastor influencer in each community;
d. They're genuinely afraid of losing members or money and have lost their focus on Matt 28 admonition to disciple their people;
e. They're cowards who would rather not do anything "controversial" and hide behind their pulpits;

Relationships are The Life Blood of this Country
In episode 25 of Faith Wins, Chad Connelly and Jim Brangenberg discuss how it's all about the Relationships…Faith Wins did 124 signature events in 2024, and were hosted by 25 different conservative denominations in the last cycle, probably unprecedented among evangelical outreach efforts.
Chad talks about how he literally had a political person tell him when he ran GOP Faith to "transfer my relationships to the party" to which he laughed. It showed the depth of ignorance to what it takes to earn trust among people who deeply value truth and authenticity and it's exactly why political approaches from parties or orgs always has and always will, fall far short.

The Power of Taking Time for Building Relationship
In episode 24 of Faith Wins, Chad Connelly and Jim Brangenberg discuss how Pastor and faith leaders are most effective when there is a long term, ongoing, authentic presence of key people building relationships and overcoming the ways most pastors have been treated through political means or organizations.
There are no "secrets" to building relationships, they take time and work. Just like your true friendships, people spell authenticity - T-I-M-E… and let's face it, most people, especially political consultants, do not want to take the required time to build those relationships. It is one of the main reason why a political approach will never maximize the impact and influence that pastors can have.
