Along with undeniable talent and a love for the water, another thread connects the world’s top surfers: a supportive family figure. Host Peter Flax, editor-in-chief of the Red Bulletin magazine, takes us on the wild journey of generational athleticism in the new podcast series Family Crest: Surf’s Up. “Family dynamics are always fascinating, and, in this case, there’s a lot to chew on,” says Flax. From Hawaii to Daytona Beach and big waves to short boards, this series explores the sacrifices, world travel and familial network behind some of today’s most competitive surfers.
Caroline Marks on her ambitious goals and the progression of women's surfing
“I'm also not going to stop pushing forward and not going to stop working towards those goals. So why not say it out loud and go for it?”
In September 2023, Caroline Marks arguably reached her potential by winning the world championship title on the World Surfing League’s championship tour. At just 21 years-old, and with seven years on the pro circuit clocked, it seemed like clinching the world title was only a matter of time for the young goofy-foot.
In this bonus episode of the Family Crest (https://www.redbull.com/us-en/theredbulletin/podcast-shows/family-crest-podcast) podcast with host Peter Flax, Marks discusses her ambitious goals (“I'm here to go to as many Olympics as possible and win a gold medal”) and how keeping her brothers around her keeps her grounded (“They humble the sh*t out of me, and I'm grateful for that”).

Kolohe Andino grew up surrounded by pro surfers
"Early on from when I was a grom, [my dad] really saw that I enjoyed the beach life, surfing, and just the art of riding waves."

Kai Lenny Finds Comfort on Big Waves
"As I drop into a big wave, and I'm at my most comfortable, I no longer feel fear, I see opportunity." —Kai Lenny
It’s wintertime in the Northern Hemisphere, and depending on whom you ask, that means different things. For most of us, that might mean snowy weather, holiday shopping or the NFL playoffs. For surfers, specifically adventurous ones, it means big waves. In this bonus episode, Kai Lenny explains how he feels surfing big waves is his purest form, how surfing helped him channel energy that had him “bouncing off of the walls” as a kid, and how bring a father makes him train harder.

Carissa Moore: The Ambassador of Aloha
In 2021, Carissa Moore (https://www.redbull.com/us-en/athlete/carissa-moore) became a household name by winning gold in the 2020 Summer Olympics—the inaugural year including surfing. But if you dig a little deeper, her prowess has been supported by her younger sister, Cayla, every step of the way. Featured voices include Carissa’s father and sister, Chris and Cayla respectively.

Kolohe Andino: Like Father, Like Son
Raised in San Clemente, CA, a—if not the—hub for modern surfing in the continental United States, Kolohe Andino (https://www.redbull.com/us-en/athlete/kolohe-andino) was born into surf culture. Caroline Marks: How Sibling Rivalry Motivates the World Champion Surfer
Sometimes sibling rivalry can be the catalyst that unlocks your potential. That’s the case for Caroline Marks (https://www.redbull.com/us-en/athlete/caroline-marks-surfing) at least. Caroline preferred riding horses before becoming the youngest surfer to qualify in the WSL at age 15. What inspired the shift? Caroline realized that to impress her two older brothers, Luke and Zach, she’d have to beat them at their own game. Seven years in, and no longer a rookie, Caroline is considered somewhat of a veteran of pro surfing, but she’s only 21 years old. And on the heals of recent win at the Rip Curl WSL Finals 2023, Caroline is the new world champion, but she'll have you know: she's just getting started. Featured voices include Caroline’s parents, Darren and Sara; brothers, Luke and Zach; and longtime coach and manager, Mike "Snips" Parsons.
