Fathers, Fantasy, & Fiction is a book club podcast where two dads work their way through fantasy novels a few chapters at a time. Along the way we recap the story, share our takes, and make bold predictions that are probably wrong.
We continue our journey through Oathbringer with chapters 64-74, as Dalinar works to bring Azir and its neighboring nations into the fight while his memories of the Rift begin to return. We dive into the increasingly mysterious events surrounding Dalinar’s past, including his encounter at the Rift, the role of Sadeas, and the shocking revelations about Ishar and the Bondsmiths. Meanwhile, Kaladin finds himself unexpectedly joining the Wall Guard in Kholinar and meeting the mysterious Highmarshal Azure, while we speculate about the guard’s true purpose and how it might connect to the Oathgate. With Dalinar’s past finally starting to catch up with him and Kholinar’s situation becoming more suspicious by the chapter, we try to piece together what Sanderson is setting up for the next big turn in the story.

Oathbringer: Chapters 55-63
We continue Oathbringer with chapters 55-63, as the story moves toward the long-awaited mission to Kholinar and the tension surrounding the city continues to build. We dive into the strange forces influencing the Alethi capital, the growing importance of the Oathgates, and the mystery of what may be lurking behind the scenes. We also revisit our theories about the Highmarshal, the Unmade, and how Lift might play a crucial role in opening the way to Azir. With the pieces finally starting to come together, we speculate about what awaits our heroes in Kholinar and whether this carefully assembled group of Radiants is about to walk straight into a trap.

Oathbringer: Chapters 44-54
We continue our journey through Oathbringer with chapters 44-54, as Shallan, Jasnah, and the rest of the Radiants uncover more mysteries surrounding Urithiru and the strange forces at work within the tower. We spend plenty of time with Moash, whose increasingly dark path continues to mirror Kaladin’s journey in fascinating ways, while debating whether redemption might still be possible for him. We also check in with Bridge Four as their squires begin developing their own abilities, and dive into theories about the Oathgates, Shadesmar, the spren, and what might be waiting in Kholinar. It may feel like a quieter stretch of the book, but with so many pieces moving into position, we’re convinced Sanderson is setting us up for something much bigger.
