I Love My Church! // Acts 20:17-38 Sermon
"I love Jesus, but I don't like the church." Plenty of people say it, and the Bible has a lot to say about how Jesus feels about the people who make up His church. Pour out your life for the people Jesus poured out His blood for. In Acts 20, the Apostle Paul says goodbye to the elders of Ephesus, a goodbye so painful that they weep, embrace him, and follow him all the way to the ship. At the center of his farewell is one verse about how he lived among them: "serving the Lord with all humility and with tears and with trials." This message shows that serving the Lord was never an abstract idea for Paul. It meant serving the flock Jesus bought with His own blood. This message walks through Acts 20:17-38 and asks what it looks like to love the church the way the Good Shepherd loves her. In this sermon: In Humility. Why humility isn't being a doormat but wanting what's best for someone else, enough to say the hard thing in love. Why Paul follows the Holy Spirit toward imprisonment and affliction instead of an easy life, and what it looks like to give your time, budget, and priorities to a mission worth more than your own comfort. With Tears. Why Paul can say he is innocent of their blood and leave with no regrets, why the church is so valuable to Jesus that He bought her with His own blood, and why "I love Jesus but not the church" doesn't hold together. Also, what loving accountability and reaching the lost look like when they're done with tears instead of pointed fingers. Through Trials. Why serving the Lord costs something in both the big trials and the ordinary daily ones, why a goodbye this painful is evidence of real love and not weak faith, and how Jesus steps into our tears instead of telling us to toughen up. Also covered: how Psalm 23, Ezekiel 34, and John 10 show God as the Good Shepherd and why sheep need one, why pastors, elders, and overseers are three names for one office, how the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit all appear in verse 28, and why Paul's suffering in obedience to the Spirit answers the prosperity gospel. ABOUT FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH HAW RIVER At First Baptist Church, we want to encourage you to know Christ, grow in Christ, and go for Christ. The Church is not a building, but a family of born-again believers who commit to loving one another by gathering together regularly for worship and running alongside one another as we know, grow, and go in Christ. We, at FBC, have been a church who loves and lives out the gospel in downtown Haw River, North Carolina, near Burlington, Graham, and Mebane since 1892. We would love to meet you on a Sunday at 11:00 am at 508 E Main St, Haw River, NC 27258. Wake Up! And Go to Church! // Acts 20:7-12 Sermon
A guy falls asleep during church, falls three stories, dies. Then everybody just goes back upstairs and keeps eating and talking. There's something almost comical about that sequence, and Luke tells it completely straight, no rebuke, no lesson about staying awake during sermons, just what happened. But underneath the strange, slightly awkward story is a full picture of what an ordinary Christian gathering actually looks like, and what it's for. This message walks through Acts 20:7-12, Paul's last night with the church in Troas before sailing out the next morning, and asks what a church is actually supposed to be doing when it gathers. In this sermon: Gather. Why the early church met on the first day of the week specifically, why gathering isn't something you do to earn God's favor but a response to grace you've already received, and why deciding your priorities ahead of time is what actually gets you through the wrinkles life throws at your plans. Eat. Why fellowship is more than sharing a room, why singing to one another is just as much a part of worship as singing to God, and why the Lord's Supper isn't sentimental or superstition but something that actually does what it claims, uniting the church to Christ and to each other. Preach. Why biblical preaching was never meant to be a one-way download of information, why these believers valued the word enough to sit through it until midnight and beyond, and what it means to walk out asking not "did I like that" but "what am I going to do because it's true." Reach. Why Paul going down to a dead man is a small picture of what the whole church is called to do for a spiritually dead world, why nobody has the power to give someone new life except God, and why that should free you to just be faithful and speak rather than feel the weight of saving anyone yourself. Also covered: why "it's never legalistic to obey Jesus," a wedding night three-hour drive so as not to miss Sunday morning, and why dead people don't need better advice, they need life. What's Your Next Step // Acts 18:24-19:7 Sermon
Everyone has a next step to take with Jesus. Talk to any airline pilot and they'll tell you about the 1 in 60 rule, being off course by just one degree puts you a mile off target after 60 miles. Over a long enough distance, a tiny miscalculation lands you somewhere completely different than where you meant to go. But there's a worse problem than drifting off course, a plane that starts its engines, taxis around the runway for hours, all motion and noise, and never actually takes off. This message walks through Acts 18:24-19:7 and finds both of these people in the church, a man who's already flying but needs to be recalibrated, and twelve men who've been taxiing on the runway of religion their whole lives, needing to finally take off. In this sermon: Believers Who Need to Grow. Why Apollos, already a believer, already teaching accurately about Jesus, still needed correction, why the private, loving way Priscilla and Aquila corrected him matters as much as the correction itself, and why growth was never meant to happen in isolation from other believers. Attenders Who Need to Know. Why asking questions before correcting someone is almost always the wiser approach, and why receiving the Holy Spirit was never meant to be a second, later experience separate from believing. Also covered: a mission trip encounter with a street preacher in Poland who tied salvation itself to speaking in tongues, why the tongues in Acts 2, 10, and 19 are marking the gospel's advance rather than setting a pattern every believer must repeat, what baptism actually does rather than merely symbolizes, and why church membership means committing to love people enough to actually correct them.
