News: WHO calls special meetings to discuss new Covid variant found in South Africa
News title: A new Covid-19 variant could show immune evasion and enhanced transmissibility, South African scientists warn Summary: South Africa's health minister announced the discovery of a new coronavirus variant that appears to be spreading rapidly in parts of the country. He advised the public to try to avoid super spreading events. Officials also expressed concern that the mutation could result in immune evasion and enhanced transmissibility of the virus, but added it is too early to tell what kind of impact the mutations will have on vaccine efficacy. More studies also need to be conducted to understand the clinical severity of the variant compared to previous variants. News title: WHO calls special meeting to discuss new Covid variant found in South Africa with ‘a large number of mutations’ Summary: The World Health Organization is monitoring a new variant with numerous mutations to the spike protein, scheduling a special meeting Friday to discuss what it may mean for vaccines and treatment. The variant, called B.1.1.529, has been detected in South Africa in small numbers, according to the WHO. The B.1.1.529 variant contains multiple mutations associated with increased antibody resistance, which may reduce the effectiveness of vaccines, along with mutations that generally make it more contagious. Other mutations in the new variant have not been seen until now, so scientists do not yet know whether they are significant or will change how the virus behaves.

News: Why Even Some Vaccinated Parents Aren't Planning to Rush To Give Kids Covid Shot
News title: Why Even Some Vaccinated Parents Aren’t Planning to Rush to Give Kids Covid Shot Summary: It is not that they are skeptical of vaccines as a rule, but they have fears, questions and hesitation about giving the Covid vaccination to their children immediately. They have concerns about the potential for side effects, including the rare heart condition myocarditis. They also question whether the vaccine should be given to children when the risk of serious complications from Covid in kids remains low. News title: Cheap Antidepressant Shows Promise Treating Early Covid Summary: a cheap antidepressant reduced the need for hospitalization among high-risk adults with Covid-19 in a study hunting for existing drugs that could be repurposed to treat coronavirus. Researchers tested the pill used for depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder because it was known to reduce inflammation and looked promising in smaller studies. The pill, called fluvoxamine, would cost $4 for a course of Covid treatment. By comparison, antibody IV treatments cost about $2,000 and Merck’s experimental antiviral pill for Covid is about $700 per course. Some experts predict various treatments will eventually be used in combination to fight the coronavirus.

Children Book: Three Little Pigs
Once upon a time there was an old mother pig who had three little pigs and not enough food to feed them. So when they were old enough, she sent them out into the world to seek their fortunes. The first little pig was very lazy. He didn't want to work at all and he built his house out of straw. The second little pig worked a little bit harder but he was somewhat lazy too and he built his house out of sticks. Then, they sang and danced and played together the rest of the day. The third little pig worked hard all day and built his house with bricks. It was a sturdy house complete with a fine fireplace and chimney. It looked like it could withstand the strongest winds. The next day, a wolf happened to pass by the lane where the three little pigs lived; and he saw the straw house, and he smelled the pig inside. He thought the pig would make a mighty fine meal and his mouth began to water. So he knocked on the door and said: Little pig, little pig! Let me in! But the little pig saw the wolf's big paws through the keyhole, so he answered back: No! No! No! Then the wolf showed his teeth and said: Then I'll huff and I'll puff and I'll blow your house down. So he huffed and he puffed and he blew the house down! The wolf opened his jaws very wide and bit down as hard as he could, but the first little pig escaped and ran away to hide with the second little pig. The wolf continued down the lane and he passed by the second house made of sticks; and he saw the house, and he smelled the pigs inside, and his mouth began to water as he thought about the fine dinner they would make. So he knocked on the door and said: Little pigs! Little pigs! Let me in! Let me in! But the little pigs saw the wolf's pointy ears through the keyhole, so they answered back: No! No! No! So the wolf showed his teeth and said: Then I'll huff and I'll puff and I'll blow your house down! So he huffed and he puffed and he blew the house down! The wolf was greedy and he tried to catch both pigs at once, but he was too greedy and got neither! His big jaws clamped down on nothing but air and the two little pigs scrambled away as fast as their little hooves would carry them. The wolf chased them down the lane and he almost caught them. But they made it to the brick house and slammed the door closed before the wolf could catch them. The three little pigs were very frightened, they knew the wolf wanted to eat them. And that was very, very true. The wolf hadn't eaten all day and he had worked up a large appetite chasing the pigs around and now he could smell all three of them inside and he knew that the three little pigs would make a lovely feast. So the wolf knocked on the door and said: Little pigs! Little pigs! Let me in! Let me in! But the little pigs saw the wolf's narrow eyes through the keyhole, so they answered back: No! No! No! So the wolf showed his teeth and said: Then I'll huff and I'll puff and I'll blow your house down. Well! he huffed and he puffed. He puffed and he huffed. And he huffed, huffed, and he puffed, puffed; but he could not blow the house down. At last, he was so out of breath that he couldn't huff and he couldn't puff anymore. So he stopped to rest and thought a bit. But this was too much. The wolf danced about with rage and swore he would come down the chimney and eat up the little pig for his supper. But while he was climbing on to the roof the little pig made up a blazing fire and put on a big pot full of water to boil. Then, just as the wolf was coming down the chimney, the little piggy pulled off the lid, and plop! in fell the wolf into the scalding water. So the little piggy put on the cover again, boiled the wolf up, and the three little pigs ate him for supper.

News: Jakarta Smart City
News title: Jakarta Smart City: The use of technology to better serve residents In recent years, Indonesia has used information and communication technology by introducing a number of applications. This technology is revolutionizing the way society functions as it is capable of bringing about the establishment of a smart city, a place where the intelligent use of technology is applied to manage resources efficiently and effectively in order to achieve quality and sustainable living. In May last year the Jakarta Administration launched a crowdsourcing app called “beride” that is expected to be used by people to share their ideas on how to develop the city. In addition, the city has also installed 7300 CCTV cameras throughout the capital to monitor for example traffic, crime, flood, and waste problems.

News: Why Aren’t Indonesia and The Philippines Getting the Vaccines They Need?
Why Aren’t Indonesia and The Philippines Getting the Vaccines They Need? COVID-19 vaccine distribution has been vastly unequal around the globe. This happened because early on, wealthier countries like the US, UK, and Singapore invested billions in pharmaceutical companies working on the vaccine. Therefore, they got priority access to the vaccines. Large unvaccinated populations can be breeding grounds for dangerous mutations of the virus, experts warn. So, the response is the COVID-19 Vaccines Global Access (COVAX) initiative set up to help countries get more equitable access. Indonesia and the Philippines each signed up to COVAX for 20% of their populations. Highlight vocabulary: Equitable The meaning of the vocabulary: Treating everyone fairly and in the same way. Fair, just, and impartial. Example: 1. The government is responsible in providing an equitable education for the whole nation. 2. A policy must be fair and equitable for everyone not just a few people. 3. The COVAX guaranteed that they will do equitable vaccine distributions all around the world.
