Today is our last episode! As we wrap up the series, we return to the full metaphor. First though, let’s review our key scripture passage, Ephesians 4:11, 12 & 16: “And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ,... when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love." Our metaphor for the church and all the gifts within the church for this series was the components of an automobile - from steering to the drivetrain to where the rubber meets the road. Let's review that metaphor again and where all the spiritual gifts fit into that metaphor.

POWER Gifts / The Gifts of Healing & Miracles
Today, we are looking at two gifts that display God’s power like none other: Healing and Miracles. So here is our charge today, listener: If we believe God is sovereign, then we believe He is the ultimate Healer. But as Reformed Evangelicals, we also recognize that God sometimes sovereignly allows suffering, like Paul's thorn in the flesh, for our sanctification. We hold two truths: God uses suffering to conform us to Christ, AND God delights in breaking into our fallen world with miraculous healing to validate the Gospel and show His compassion.

POWER Gifts / The Gifts of Discernment of Spirits, Tongues, & Interpretation of Tongues
In this week’s episode, we are combining three POWER gifts today: Discernment of Spirits, the Gift of Tongues, and the Interpretation of Tongues. In our car metaphor, we are looking at the oil filter–discernment, and the one of the special systems of the car engine like ones that provide extra power or traction–the gifts of Tongues and Interpretation of Tongues. And, let's be clear, there's a lot of debate about the gift of Tongues, which is exactly why we need the filter of Discernment!
When a church opens itself up to the POWER gifts—when the engine is pulling in a lot of power—we become a target for counterfeit spiritual activity. We need a mechanism to filter out the impurities, ensuring our worship remains anchored in the truth of Christ. We also need discernment in a ton of other ways in Church life. So, let's define these 3 gifts...

POWER Gifts / The Gift of Intercessory Prayer
Last week, we talked about the Gift of Faith—the engine’s fuel. This week, we turn to another essential component of our powertrain.
The Gift of Intercessory Prayer is the air in the engine—just as essential as the fuel. If faith is the fuel that carries the energy of God’s promises, then intercessory prayer is the oxygen that allows that fuel to ignite and produce power. And, of course, God Himself provides the spark—the initiating power that brings it all to life.
Intercessors often have a heightened sensitivity to spiritual opposition. They don't just pray about a list; they pray through crises or even for a specific person, event, or ministry until a prayer is answered. They are responsible for covering so many of God’s people, indeed all people, in prayer.

POWER Gifts / The Gift of Faith
Last week, we introduced the POWER gifts—which collectively represent the power train of our church “car.” They provide the power that moves the church forward. We also stated that our posture on the POWER gifts at CHBC is one of “biblical expectation”: we want everything God has for us, governed by the peace and order of the Gospel.
Consistent with that view, some POWER gifts are essential to the engine’s daily operation (and the life of our church), while others function more like specialized components—engaged in particular moments, like a turbocharger or traction control.
Today, we turn to an essential element of engine power: the fuel itself—the Gift of Faith.
As Reformed believers, we love Sola Fide—Faith Alone. We know we are justified by faith. But the spiritual gift of Faith in 1 Corinthians 12:9 is a distinct, supernatural empowerment for the daily life of the church.

Introduction to the POWER Gifts
We’ve talked about the LOVE Gifts (the tires) and the WORD Gifts (the steering wheel). Today we introduce the POWER Gifts—the Engine. And for many Christians, the fear is that "Power" means "unpredictable" or "unbiblical." That’s why we’re starting today not with an experience, but with a theological anchor. We want to see how these gifts fit within the Five Solas—specifically Sola Scriptura—and how the greats of our tradition, like John Calvin, actually pointed us toward the power of the Spirit.

WORD Gifts / The Gift of Evangelism
Today we are reaching the end of the "WORD Gifts"—the steering wheel of the church. We’ve covered Leadership, Encouragement, Pastoring, Teaching, and Apostleship. And, today, we are talking about the gift that brings people into the car in the first place. We are talking about the gift of Evangelism.
Now, before everyone tunes out because they think, "I'm not Billy Graham," let’s clarify what this gift actually is. We think an "Evangelist" is only someone holding a crusade in a stadium. But biblically, the gift is much more personal. While every Christian is called to witness—just like every Christian is called to give—the gift of Evangelism is a special empowerment. People with this gift often see fruit that the rest of us struggle to see. They have a supernatural ability to help people cross the line of faith.

WORD Gifts / The Gift of Apostleship
We are nearing the end of our WORD gifts series. If you remember our car analogy, the LOVE gifts are the tires giving us traction, and these WORD gifts are the steering wheel, providing direction and truth. Today, we’re looking at a steering wheel gift that takes the car completely off-road: The Gift of Apostleship. And, to be honest, "Apostle" is a heavy, intimidating word. Most people immediately think of the original Twelve Apostles, or Paul, or maybe a hyper-authoritative church leader on TV. Thus, we need to distinguish we're not referring to the "office" here, but the "gift".
The word itself, apostolos in Greek, literally means "a sent one." The gift of Apostleship is the God-given ability to be sent out to pioneer, establish, and oversee new ministries or church communities.

WORD GIFTS / The Gift of Teaching
We are deep into the "Word Gifts"—the gifts that function as the steering system for the church, clarifying God's nature and purposes. We've covered Leadership, Encouragement, and Pastoring. And today we are talking about the gift that often fuels all the others. We are talking about the gift of Teaching.
And, to clear up misconceptions, this is different than preaching; while preaching often involves teaching, the spiritual gift of Teaching is much broader. Teaching is the ability to "unpack" the Scriptures. Think of the Bible as a suitcase packed tight with truth. The Teacher is the one who can open it up, lay everything out, and show you exactly what is in there and why it matters.

WORD GIFTS / The Gift of Pastoring (Shepherding)
Today, we’re talking about a gift that sounds like a job title, but is actually a spiritual empowerment available to many believers. We’re talking about the gift of Pastoring, or as it's often called, Shepherding.
And, right off the bat, we need to clear up the biggest confusion with this gift. When people hear "Pastor," they think it means standing on a stage, preaching a sermon, and having an office at the church. But biblically, there is a distinction between the office of Pastor/Elder and the spiritual gift of Pastoring. Ephesians 4:11 lists "shepherds" as a gift given to the body. While those with the Leadership gift stand out front and say, "There is the mountain. Let's go climb it!" The Shepherd walks among the sheep and says, "I see you’re limping. Let me wrap that up so you can make the climb." It’s a long-term care gift.

We are right in the middle of our "WORD Gifts" series—the gifts that clarify the nature and action of God. Last week, we talked about Leadership, which we called the "Steering Wheel" of the body. And today, we’re talking about the gift that keeps the car moving when the road gets rough. We are diving into the gift of Encouragement (also known as the gift of exhortation).

WORD GIFTS / The Gift of Leadership
Last week, we introduced the "Word Gifts"—the steering system of the church. These are the gifts that clarify God’s nature and purpose.
And for today's episode, we are grabbing that steering wheel with both hands. We are talking about the gift of Leadership. Now, when we say "Leadership," most people immediately think of a CEO, a General, or maybe the Senior Pastor. It feels like a title, not a gift. But in Scripture, it is a specific empowerment of the Spirit. Paul lists it in Romans 12:8. Depending on your translation, it says "the one who leads" or "the one who rules," and the instruction is to do it "with zeal".

Introduction to the WORD Gifts
We just finished our deep dive into the "Love" gifts—the tires of the car—and now we are moving into our second major category for the next six weeks: The WORD gifts.
If the Love gifts demonstrate God's affection, the Word gifts explain God's truth. They help us understand who God is and what He wants us to do. Over the next few weeks, we are going to cover six specific gifts: Leadership, Encouragement, Pastoring, Teaching, Apostleship, and Evangelism.

LOVE GIFTS / The Gift of Giving
Today, we are wrapping up our block on the "Love Gifts" or "Service Gifts"—the ones that practically manifest God's love to the body. We've talked about Administration, Helps, and Mercy. But today, we are talking about the gift that often fuels all the others. We are talking about the gift of Giving. Now, before everyone reaches for their wallets or changes the channel, we need to make a distinction. We are not talking about the command to tithe or be generous. Those are commands for every Christian to exercise as spiritual disciplines. We are talking about the spiritual gift of Giving, found in Romans 12:8.

We believe that God has given every believer a supernatural empowerment to serve His church. But the problem is, many of us don't know what that is.
Thus, we are embarking on an 18-week journey together to help you discover your spiritual gift(s) with the goal that Chapel Hill Bible Church can be built up in love as we live into and practice our spiritual gifts together.
For this journey, we'll be leaning heavily on a book called "Convergence" by Jon Thompson. He argues that the authentic Christian life happens when three things converge: Spiritual Disciplines, Spiritual Experiences, and Spiritual Gifts. And for this series, we are zooming in on that third leg of the stool—the Gifts.
For this first episode, we'll kickoff the podcast as well as begin our discussion on the first category of Spiritual Gifts - the LOVE GIFTS.
