Alright folks, today we are taking a little bit of a departure and getting into a specific, relevant topic: Film Tax Incentives.
It seems like every other conversation I have about advocacy and the legislative work I have been involved in in the past devolves into the same old “but we need tax incentives” point of view. I also think there are likely a lot of folks who may not even really know what that means or entails or that its not just a singular thing. The idea of rebates or production incentives has a lot of nuance and many different possibilities. So…
Today, we are going to do our best to demystify how these state incentives work, talk a bit about a massive shift happening right now in Washington, and dig into how a proposed federal film incentive and office could level the playing field for non-incentive states—like Vermont.
I am by no means an expert in this field, but figured it was worthwhile to try and level our understanding of what an incentive actually is, how it could benefit us in Vermont and the different types of incentives that exist out there.

When this AFI Directing Fellow is not writing or directing, you can find her supporting other Vermont filmmakers as a volunteer board member of The Vermont Production Collective where she runs the Vermont Screenplay Incubator, supporting the story building and writing of other screenwriters.
Today on the podcast we talk primarily about her upcoming short film project, The Books. Based on the award-winning novella THE BOOKS, written by an 8th grader in rural Vermont, this speculative thriller is set on the rural fringes of an authoritarian regime, where 15 year old Sloane risks everything to save a piece of history.

Sean was the cinematographer on the cult doc film 'Zoo'. His previous work spans a variety of narrative and doc work across a broad spectrum of mediums ranging from 16mm to digital and his latest project will see him as writer director telling the devastating story of Vermont farmer Romaine Tenney.
