#21: THE TUNDRA WITHIN ME - Authenticity in Sámi Stories with Sara Margrethe Oskal

In Episode #21 of film.macht.kritisch., I speak with Sámi artist Sara Margrethe Oskal about authenticity, indigenous storytelling, and the making of her debut feature Eallogierdu – THE TUNDRA WITHIN ME (2023) 🎬. SHORT BIOSara Margrethe Oskal is a Sámi filmmaker, author, performer, actor, and joiker from Guovdageaidnu (Kautokeino), Norway. She worked for ten years as a reindeer herder on the Sápmi tundra before turning to theatre, performing arts, and cinema, and later earned a PhD in Performing Arts at the Oslo National Academy of Arts. Her debut feature Eallogierdu – THE TUNDRA WITHIN ME premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2023 and won the TILDA Award for Best Film by a Female Director at the Braunschweig International Film Festival in 2024. Sara currently stars in the TV series Heajastallan – A Sámi Wedding (2026, NRK) and in the opera Ovllá at the Oulu Sinfonia (Finland). She is developing her next feature, A House in the Arctic. Eallogierdu – THE TUNDRA WITHIN MEIn her debut feature film, Sara Margrethe Oskal explores Sámi identity, intergenerational dynamics, and the delicate balance between tradition and modernity. The story follows Lena, a Sámi artist who has lived for many years in Oslo and returns to her hometown in the Sápmi tundra. She navigates family, gender roles, community, and personal choices, and through her romantic relationship with the reindeer herder Máhtte, both discover a new sense of belonging and connection to their roots. The artworks attributed to Lena are created by Sámi artist Máret Ánne Sara, whose pieces appear throughout the film, enriching its visual and cultural landscape. „Wir waren da, wir sind immer noch da” - Massiamy Diaby über Ku’Damm 77 und Poeler Luft

In Episode #20 von film.macht.kritisch. spreche ich mit Massiamy Diaby über ihre Arbeit als Schauspielerin und Filmemacherin 🎬 KURZBIOMassiamy Diaby ist freischaffende Künstlerin und lebt in Berlin. Geboren in Frankfurt, aufgewachsen auf Poel, in Berlin und Accra, schloss sie 2020 ihr Schauspielstudium an der Folkwang Universität der Künste ab. Von 2019 bis 2022 war sie Ensemblemitglied am Residenztheater München. Sie entwickelt Theaterperformances, realisiert Filme, schreibt Gedichte und studiert seit 2024 im Master Kunst im Kontext an der Universität der Künste Berlin. FILME UND SERIENIn der Serie Ku’Damm 77 (seit 27. Dezember 2025 in der ZDF-Mediathek) spielt sie Linda Müller, eine junge Schwarze Dokumentarfilmerin der 70er Jahre, die Rassismus und gesellschaftliche wie familiäre Machtstrukturen sichtbar macht - und ihre eigene Handlungsmacht entwickelt. Massiamy Diabys Kurzfilm Poeler Luft (Regie & Drehbuch) wurde unter anderem beim Afrika Film Festival Köln und beim AfryKamera Festival in Warschau gezeigt. #19: film.macht.kritisch. Screenings: Practicing Curatorial Justice

Following up on Episode #9, which introduced the 6 Key Elements of Curatorial Justice, this episode moves from theory into action. We explore what it means to take curatorial responsibility seriously — centering context, authorship, ethical representation, and political clarity, rather than relying on supposedly “universal” or “neutral” perspectives. To bring these ideas to life, I reflect on five international short films from the first film.macht.kritisch.
