Hey, it’s a January catch-up episode of the Gimme Fiction podcast. I run through the new(ish) releases I watched last month, from forgotten studio horror and wild mystery screenings to bold arthouse experiments and some of the best genre films of the year so far.

Email: mike[at]gimmefiction[dot][com]

YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@gimmefictionhq

Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/gimmefictionhq

TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@gimmefictionhq

Letterboxd: https://letterboxd.com/mikemoodygarcia

All the shit: https://gimmefiction.com

Chapters:

00:00 Intro / January catch-up

01:53 Primate

07:53 The Chronology of Water

10:46 The Testament of Van Lee

14:05 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple

17:49 Send Help

20:37 The Plague

23:18 Is This Thing On?

25:09 Keeper

26:25 Luc Besson’s Dracula (quick thoughts)

'90s Ninja Turtles, Physical Media, and Inner Peace | Gimme Fiction Podcast

This week, the pod is all about the comfort of physical media and why the original 1990 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie still wipes the floor with every modern Turtles thing. From renting a beat-up Blu-ray at We Luv Video in Austin to slowly building a VHS and cassette collection, this episode is basically a love letter to stuff you can actually hold in your hands.

We get into why that first Turtles movie feels so special: the tone, the grit, the Jim Henson suits, the way the turtles are written like actual people, and why Shredder rules as a mythic trash-samurai crime dad. Then it zooms out into a bigger thing about offline community and how good it feels to enjoy movies and music that are not trying to data-mine your soul.

If you have a local video store or record shop, this is your sign to go talk to the person behind the counter and rent or buy something real.

Email: mike[at]gimmefiction[dot][com]

YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@gimmefictionhq

Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/gimmefictionhq

TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@gimmefictionhq

Letterboxd: https://letterboxd.com/mikemoodygarcia

All the shit: https://gimmefiction.start.page

Chapters:

0:00 Sick week and comfort movies

1:05 Falling back into physical media

2:05 Renting the 1990 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

4:09 Why the original TMNT still destroys every reboot

7:51 Back in love with tapes, VHS, and non-surveillance media

12:18 Tone and sincerity in TMNT 1990

13:20 Gritty indie texture and those Henson suits

15:24 Actual characters, not action figures

18:01 Why nothing else in the franchise quite lands like this

19:24 Building an offline media life that actually feels like home

22:35 Shooting YouTube on old camcorders and how to reach me

If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, Frankenstein, Bugonia, and More

Welcome to the first episode of the Gimme Fiction podcast. I’m settling into my little place in North Loop, sipping hot tea, fighting off the tail end of a bug, and finally carving out time to talk about the stuff I love. Movies. Filmmaking. The simple (sometimes) life of a film lover who runs a small creative studio and makes fun personal work on the side.

This episode is basically me catching you up on everything. And of course, the new movies I’ve been watching. It’s a long list. Some I adored. Some I tolerated. Some made me want to sink into my seat in frustration. I talk about all of it.

We get into the joy of Rose Byrne in If I Had Legs, I'd Kick You. We get into the disappointment of a flat and strangely empty Frankenstein. We get into Josh O’Connor doing dusty 70s con man magic in The Mastermind. We go through the fun, the bad, the bleak, and the surprise hits.

And I tell you how all of this fits into my creative life right now, why I’m making little films for YouTube, and why I’m not chasing trends or trying to be an influencer. I’m just trying to make things that feel like me.

We also talk filming/vlogging gear. The trusty Sony ZV-E10. The Rode Wireless Pro. My need for a cheap but reliable gimbal. And why I treat this whole project like a creative playground instead of a content plan.

Thanks for being here at the start. Reach out any time.

Email: mike[at]gimmefiction[dot][com].

YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@gimmefictionhq

Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/gimmefictionhq

TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@gimmefictionhq

Letterboxd: https://letterboxd.com/mikemoodygarcia

All the shit: https://gimmefiction.start.page

Chapters

00:00 Hot tea and fighting a bug
02:00 New apartment, new energy06:00 Finding time to make personal videos again09:00 Talking movies10:27 If I Had Legs, I'd Kick You16:22 Frankenstein (Guillermo del Toro)20:29 The Mastermind22:20 Shelby Oaks24:00 Bugonia (Yorgos Lanthimos)28:36 Black Phone 230:05 The Conjuring: Last Rites31:33 Deathstalker33:12 Movies I'm excited to see next35:05 Making videos, not content38:11 My simple gear setup41:15 Help me find a gimbal42:45 Final thoughts and how to reach me
