Textile as speech: Preserve my words forever

In this episode, we explore how textiles and language share a remarkable ability to preserve memory, truth and lived experience. Inspired by Osip Mandelstam’s poem Preserve My Words Forever, we consider how words, like stitches, can endure censorship, carry witness and outlive the political systems that seek to silence them. Mandelstam’s imagery of resin, tar, labour and an iron shirt invites a textile reading, revealing poetry itself as a woven fabric of experience. From court embroideries and Soviet propaganda textiles to the Chilean arpilleras and the AIDS Memorial Quilt, we examine cloth as both an instrument of political power and a medium of testimony. Drawing on the ideas of George Orwell, Hannah Arendt, Solomon Asch and Mikhail Bakhtin, the episode reflects on the relationship between language, ideology and artistic independence, asking why artists are often tempted by the comfort of belonging. Ultimately, it asks what kind of memory we choose to weave into our work, and why words and stitches grounded in personal experience remain among the most enduring forms of truth, remembrance and creative resistance. They Were Always There: Women, Power, and the Stories We Refuse to See

In this episode, we move between a Baroque painting, modern space exploration, and the quiet structures of everyday life to explore how women’s contributions have often been seen – but not fully recognised. From Artemisia Gentileschi to Artemis program, we trace how visibility, authority, and expectation shape the way achievement is perceived. This is a reflection on power, perception, and the systems that still struggle to adjust to change. Along the way, we also turn to the psychological mechanisms behind judgment and authority- how status perception, inherited cultural patterns, and subtle biases shape reactions to women in positions of expertise. At its core, this episode is a philosophical inquiry into how meaning is assigned to power, and who is historically allowed to embody it. From Soul Scars, Beauty Blooms

In this episode, we explore the art and philosophy of mending – not just of cloth, but of life itself. When you sit down with a needle and thread, it isn’t merely about repairing a shirt or a sock. It is about entering a conversation that has lasted for centuries, connecting with every hand that stitched before yours. Mending has never been merely practical; it carries care, resourcefulness, and the stories woven into our clothes. Across history and cultures, repair has revealed both necessity and beauty. To mend is to understand how and why something was broken, worn, torn, or rubbed away. It is a careful act of attention, tracing causes and recognising history, before reweaving, remaking, and reimagining anew. Philosophically, mending challenges the illusion of permanence, honours imperfection, and transforms what was broken into something stronger and more meaningful. Beyond textiles, this practice resonates with larger forms of damage: the fractures caused by war, displacement, violence, and social injustice – sometimes in our hands, a needle and thread joining together the broken parts of memory and our wounded souls.
