Financial Services-An Industry in Transition. Episode 3 - The Institutions

Death, taxes and change. These are things that are inevitable and change, in the financial services industry, is happening and accelerating at quite some pace. Currently, in the Financial Advice space, one of the most significant changes is the transition from a product-based environment to an advice-based environment. It only takes one breath to say this but the effects are significant and are going to pose terrific challenges for all role players including the Financial Institutions and Financial Advisors. Combine this with the focus and the regulatory emphasis on suitable, predictable and appropriate client outcomes, the challenges and, dare I say, the opportunities, are mounting up.

This Podcast will touch on some of the looming challenges, as I see things, and serve as an early warning for you to take a close look at your businesses to prepare for the changing environment, its challenges and its opportunities.

Enjoy the listen

Financial Services - An Industry in Transition. Episode 2: The Regulator & the Regulatory Environment

Just a word of advice before we get into the podcast. The title, The Regulator and the Regulatory Environment may sound boring and perhaps even a bit technical to some but, believe me, it’s essential listening if you are to get a full understanding of the transitional process that our industry in South Africa is going through and, more importantly, why we are having to endure this process or metamorphosis.

In the course of the fairly extensive research that I have laboured through, and the more that I got into the exercise, the more I realised that this is the bedrock or foundation stone of the industry and its future. To the more informed this may sound obvious but I am trying to make the point to those who, historically, have just kind of gone with the flow as regulations have changed and been implemented without necessarily embracing the logic and rationale and interpreting and implementing the changes to gain a competitive advantage.

Please exercise some patience but listen carefully to what I am going to be saying then, once I have got through the scene setting, I will then put on my soothsayer’s hat and, based upon my interpretation of recent global developments, I will plant some seeds in your minds and give you something to think about and use in your process of adapting your business to the extent that is necessary to retain or even gain relevance in the ever changing environment. I am of the firm opinion that we are in a unique position with a unique opportunity to get in on the ground floor as these changes start to take effect.
